Coming off the hard fought and well earned 3 to 2 victory over the Laredo United Longhorns this past Wednesday afternoon, the playoff bound Eagle Pass Eagles varsity baseball squad mentored by head coach Reynol Mendoza and assistant coaches Henry Silva and Chris Villa hosted none other than the current District 29-6A leading Laredo Alexander Bulldogs in an 8:00 PM district baseball diamond encounter at the newly named Leoplodo “Polo” Moncada Baseball Field at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center on Friday, April 22, 2016. These two teams had met twice already splitting those two games with each team winning at their own home field. The Eagles’ victory over the Alexander Bulldogs is the only district loss the Bulldogs have suffered so far.
After a scoreless first inning of play the league leading Laredo Alexander Bulldogs broke into the scoring column with three runs in the top half of the second inning on 2 hits, 2 hit batsmen, 1 intentional walk and a pair of wild pitches.
The home standing Eagles did not break into the scoring column until the bottom of the sixth when they tallied what proved to their only run of the night with Sergio Soliz leading off the frame with a double, stole third and came home on a throwing error by the Alexander catcher.
In the top of the seventh the Bulldogs tacked on a lone run to make the score 4 to 1 while the Eagles were retired in order in the bottom of the seventh with all three batters going down by the strikeout route giving the Laredo Alexander pitcher a total of 15 strikeouts on the night as the Laredo Alexander Bulldogs prevailed by the final score of 4 to 1 over the Eagle Pass Eagles.
