Eagles take thriller over

Del Rio Rams 8 to 6

The playoff bound Eagle Pass Eagles varsity baseball team closed out their 2016 District 29-6A baseball schedule on Tuesday, April 26, 2016 with a road trip to Del Rio, Texas to tangle with their longest rival the Del Rio Rams in 7:00 PM district diamond finale.  Throughout this storied rivalry records or standing do not mean a thing as these two high school baseball programs have battled each other with good old fashion baseball from the opening pitch til the final out is recorded.

Tuesday night proved to be no different as the home standing Rams jumped out to take the lead in this contest with a four run uprising in the bottom half of the second inning on an Eagles error and five of the eight total base hits for the game.

Not fazed by their four run deficit the proud Eagles wiped out the deficit with a big five run production in the top half of the fourth inning with Olexis Gutierrez leading off the frame with a walk, Dee Andre Torres singled, Jorge Rodriguez also singled to load the bases, designated hitter Eriq Gomez came through with a two RBI double to drive in Olexis Gutierrez and Dee Andre Torres, freshman right fielder Rey Mendoza connected with an RBI single to bring home Jorge Rodriguez, Orly Martinez reached on a hit by pitch, pinch runner Alex Luna tallied courtesy of a wild pitch, Sergio Soliz advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt,  pinch hitter Albert Velasquez lifted an RBI sacrifice fly to right field to bring home Rey Mendoza giving the Eagles a 5 to 4 lead over the Del Rio Rams.

In the top of the fifth the Eagle Pass Eagles extended their lead over the Rams by plating a pair of runs with Dee Andre Torres leading off the frame with a double, Jorge Rodriguez drew a walk and was replaced by pinch runner Raul Ramirez, Eriq Gomez grounded out to third but both runners advanced one base, Rey Mendoza hit a clutch RBI single to drive in Dee Andre Torres, Orly Martinez followed with an RBI single to bring home Paul Ramirez to give the Eagles a 7 to 4 lead over the Rams.

However as is the case in this longtime rivalry the home standing Rams refused to go away and mounted a two run rally in the bottom of the six to narrow their deficit to only one run on three hits and a pair of Eagle Pass errors to make the score 7 to 6 in favor of the Eagles heading to the seventh and final inning of play,

In the top of the seventh the visiting Eagles tacked on a lone run with Jorge Rodriguez belting a single, Eriq Gomez followed with a single. Rey Mendoza collected his third hit of the game to loaded the bases, Orly Martinez grounded out into a 6-2-3 double play but on the throw to first from the Rams catcher Eriq Gomez very alertly scored on the play with what proved to be an insurance run for the Eagles.

In the bottom of the seventh Eagles young freshmen pitcher Rey Mendoza took over the mound duties from starting hurler Tony Galvan and the tall left hander managed to retire the side in order to earn the save and give the Eagle Pass Eagles a well earned thrilling 8 to 6 victory over the Del Rio Rams..
