Mavericks fall to District Champ

The C.C. Winn Mavericks’ varsity baseball team who are still mathematically alive for a possible post season playoff berth journeyed to Uvalde, Texas on Tuesday, April 26, 2016 to take on the District 29-5A champion Uvalde Coyotes in a 7:00 PM district baseball encounter.

The home standing Coyotes quickly jumped out to the lead in this contest with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning on a walk and pair of base hits.  In the bottom half of the third inning the Uvalde Coyotes tacked on another pair of runs to take a 4 to 0 lead over the Mavericks and the added a lone run in the bottom of the fourth.

The visiting C.C. Winn Mavericks could only counter with a lone run in the top half of the fifth inning with Mike Hernandez leading off the frame with a hit by pitch, with one out Ernesto Villasenor drew a walk, Juan Garza stepped up to the plate and belted an RBI single to drive in Mike Hernandez with what proved to be the only run the Mavericks would produce on this night.

Uvalde tacked on one more run in the bottom of the fifth to come away with their 6 to 1 victory over the Mavericks who now must defeat the Laredo Cigarroa Toros in their district finale this coming Friday and depend on the Southside Cardinals to defeat the Somerset Bulldogs in their district finale in order to force a one game playoff against Somerset for the fourth and final playoff spot in the district
