The playoff bound Eagle Pass Eagles varsity baseball team mentored by head coach Reynol Mendoza and assistant coaches Henry Silva and Chris Villa culminated their 2016 regular season with a 7:00 PM non district encounter against the San Antonio Brandeis Broncos at the Leopoldo “Polo” Moncada Baseball field at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center.
The home standing Eagles dented the scoreboard first with a pair of runs in the home half of the second inning with Eriq Gomez drawing a one out walk, Rey Mendoza followed with a single advancing pinch runner Alex Luna over to second, Eagles catcher Orly Martinez connected with an RBI single to drive in Alex Luna with the first run of the game, shortstop Sergio Soliz belted an RBI single to bring home Rey Mendoza giving the Eagles the early 2 to 1 lead.
The visiting Brandeis Broncos could only manage to answer with what proved to be their only run of this game in the top half of the fourth inning courtesy of a wild pitch but that was the only damage they would produce off of four Eagles pitchers who each got in some quality work in preparation for their upcoming bi-district playoff series against the La Joya Palmview Lobos next week.
In the bottom of the fifth inning the proud Eagles got that run back with Braulio Rodriguez leading off the frame with a single, Mando Lopez walked, both runners advanced to second and third respectively on a wild pitch, Olexis Gutierrez the lifted a sacrifice fly to left field enabling courtesy runner Franky Sanchez to tag up at third and sprint home with the final run of this non-district match allowing the Eagles to come away with the well earned 3 to 1 victory over the Brandeis Broncos with reliever Eli Perez earning the victory and reliever Rey Mendoza earning the save.
