11th All-time Season Opener

The much anticipated and long awaited official kickoff to the 2016 Texas High School football season kicks-off this coming Friday, August 26, 2016 when the mighty C.C. Winn Mavericks under the direction of head football coach Eric Villaseñor hit the road to the Spinach Capital of the World Crystal City, Texas to inaugurate their 11th all-time gridiron opener by tangling with the Crystal City Javelinas in a 7:30 PM non-district football matchup.
The home standing Crystal City Javelinas mentored by head coach David Lopez return the services of 6 offensive and 4 defensive starters back from a bi-district finalist squad that finished with an overall season of 8-3 last season. Spearheading the Javelnas offense this season will be starting quarterback Sebastian Mendoza (6’ 0” 195 lbs.) who posses above average speed and fairly accurate passer having passed for nearly 800 yards with 15 TD passes last season. Joining him in the backfield will be their bruising fullback Eugene Leyva (5’ 10”, 210 lbs.) along with a pair of swift running backs with the likes of Austin Sanchez (6, 2”, 180 lbs.) who gained 580 yards last year and David Patino (5’ 10”, 160 lbs.) Paving the way for the Javelinas running game will be veteran offensive linemen JJ Gutierrez (6’ 2”, 300 lbs.) and Mark Puente. Year in and year out the Crystal City Javelinas have been known to feature some formidable running backs and this year should be no exception.
On the defensive side of the ball the Javelinas will showcase a pair of experienced defensive ends in Keith Delgado and Jacob Rivera. D’von Simmons will also anchor the defensive line. Josh Perez and standout David Patino will patrol the Javelinas secondary. Eugene Leyva will pull double duty as the starting fullback as well as the starting linebacker. The Javelinas are well known or their aggressive defense that does not back down from any challenges.
The visiting C.C. Winn Mavericks will venture into their 2016 season opener under the leadership of fourth year head football coach Eric Villaseñor. Heriberto Roz will be the Mavericks offensive coordinator as well as the quarterbacks coach, Charlie Soto will serve as the Co-Special Teams Coordinator as well as the running backs coach, Fred Paniagua will mentor the outside receivers, Isaac Gracia will tutor the inside receivers and tight end, Domingo Lopez will be the offensive line coach. On the defensive side of the ball Saul Salas will be the Co-Defensive coordinator as well as the linebackers coach, Rene Ramirez will serve as the Co-Defensive Coordinator and mentor the defensive backs, J.J. Iracheta will be the Co-Special Teams Coordinator and mentor the defensive line, Sergio Esquivel will tutor the defensive ends and Ricardo Hoffman will be in charge of the defensive backs. Paulo Valero, Tony Martinez and Patrick Sanchez will lead the Mavericks freshmen team.
The C.C. Winn Mavericks starting offense will feature multi-sport standout Julio Ruiz #8 as the Mavericks new starting signal caller. Joining him in the backfield will be Omar Hinojosa #22 who will handle the chores of the featured running back in the famed Mavericks ground oriented attack. The Mavericks wide receiving corps will feature standout Ruben Esquivel #7, Gilbert Rodriguez #12 as the wide outs with Alfonso Cardona as the slot back and Jose Rodriguez #82 as the tight end. The Mavericks massive offensive line will be comprised by Mario Elizondo #77 at left tackle, Emmanuel Orta #66 at let tackle, Kuz Garcia #54 at center, Joey Salazar #75 at right guard and Jaime Fuentes #73 at right tackle.
The Mavericks predominately aggressive defense will feature a very formidable defensive front four with the likes of defensive tackles Carlos Tijerina #76 and Enrique Garza #72. The defensive ends will be Jacob Guerra #92 with Victor Olguin #65 and Pablo De Leon #33 splitting time at the other defensive end slot. The Mavericks hard hitting line backing corps will feature Albert Duran #42 with Ernesto Villasenor #32 and Rolando Sanchez #56 sharing action at the other linebacker position. The defensive secondary will consist of cornerbacks Alex De Jesus #20 and Alonso Vallejo #23. The free safety will be veteran standout Rene Auces #31 the pre-season favorite to be selected the 2016 District 29-5A Defensive MVP, the strong safety will be Raul Gomez #28 with Rey Vasquez #30 and Jesus Flores #34 splitting time at the weak safety slot. Julio Ruiz #8 will once again handle the Mavericks punting chores while Norberto Barragan #57 will be in charge of the placekicking duties.
