The Eagle Pass Eagles varsity football team under the guidance of head football coach Tom Gonzalez coming off a very narrow loss at the hands of the District co-leading Laredo United South Panthers this past Friday, ventured to Laredo, Texas on Saturday, October 22, 2016 to tangle with the Laredo United Longhorns in a vital 7:00 PM matchup at the United ISD Student Activity Center.   Both the visiting Eagles and home standing Longhorns entered this matchup with identical overall season records of 4-3 and district mark of 2-2.  Turnovers and bad field possession plagued the Eagles all game long as the United Longhorns dealt a heavy blow to the Eagles slim chances of making the playoffs with a convincing 48 to 7 victory over the visiting Eagle Pass Eagles with their patented prolific aerial show and steady running game as well as a very aggressive and stingy defense.  The game got quite sloppy and testy late in the second half as a whopping combined total of 21 penalties were called in this game.

Things started not according to plan for the Eagles offense as on their sixth offensive play of the game they fumbled the ball sway which was recovered by United’s linebacker Carlos Sepulveda and returned for a touchdown and things just got worse from that point on for the Eagles who surprisingly struggled offensively to get anything going against a United defense that has struggled against running teams all season.

Laredo United extended their lead on the second offensive series of the night with a 66 yard scoring drive capped off with a four yard keeper by quarterback David Sanchez II with one second showing on the first quarter clock. Yahid Pena tacked on the point after to make the score 14 to 0 in favor of the United Longhorns.

Disaster struck the Eagles offense once again on their third offensive series of the game when they fumble at their own 23 yard line.  United’s defensive back Jorge Murillo scooped up the errant pigskin and returned it 20 yards for the touchdown with 11:07 in the second period.  Yahid Pena added the point after to pad the Longhorns lead to 21 to 0/

Late in the second quarter the United Longhorns mounted a 75 yard scoring drive culminating with a five yard touchdown pass from quarterback David Sanchez II to multi talented wide receiver Kevin Esparza who also serves as the Longhorns very capable backup signal caller with 2:41 left in the first half.  The point after attempt failed but the United Longhorns managed to take a comfortable 27 to 0 lead over the Eagles into their halftime locker room.  The Longhorns defense held the usually powerful Eagles running game to only a total of 46 yards rushing and 8 yards passing in the first half of play.

Things did not fare any better for the Eagles in the second half as the Longhorns aerial show and ground attack just could not be stopped and the Eagles offense just could not muster much offense at all.  The Longhorns tallied three more touchdowns in the second half to build an insurmountable 48 to 0 lead over the Eagles and it could have been worse as the Longhorns threw a pair of interceptions inside the red zone and also fumbled once inside the red zone.

Late in the game the Eagles finally dented the score board when backup quarterback Ricardo Luna connected with wide receiver Ricky Reyes for a 25 yard touchdown pass with only 31 seconds left in the game on a pass that ricochet off o a United defenders hands and fell into the waiting arms of Ricky Reyes in the end zone.  Eagles’ placekicker Jose Riojas split the uprights to make the final score 48 to 7 in favor of the home standing Laredo United Longhorns.  The loss drops the Eagles to an even 4-4 overall season record and a 2-3 district mark with two games remaining on the schedule.
