The Pride of South Texas, the mighty and highly touted Eagle Pass High School varsity boys and varsity girls cross country programs under the tutelage of head coach Juan Gonzalez once again reign supreme as they captured the highly competitive District 29-6A Cross Country Meet championships held at San Antonio Southwest High School on Saturday, October 22, 2016 and have now earned the right to compete in the 2016 UIL Region IV Cross Country Meet to be held on Saturday, October 29, 2016 in Corpus Christi, Texas.  This is the very first time in school history that both the boys and girls teams win the district championship in the same year.

VARSITY GIRLS DIVISION

The predominately youthful Eagle Pass Lady Eagles varsity girls squad captured the overall team title as well as the individual District championship title spearheaded by Monica Rivera who crossed the finish line first to take the individual championship medal, young teammate Shanya Luna also earned an individual medal coming in 3rd as did teammate Sarah Monsivais who came in 7th.  Rounding out the district championship squad were Andrea Garcia who placed 11TH, Nicole Oca-Lopez who came in 19th, Briana Vasquez who placed 23rd, and Ana Cristina Alvarez who came in 24th.

 

*Editor’s Note: for some unexplained reason in the girl’s division the scoring and timing device malfunctioned that is why no individual times were recorded

VARSITY BOYS DIVISION:

The high powered State’s 12th ranked Eagle Pass varsity boys blew away the field in capturing the overall team title with a total of 27 points to outdistance the runner-up Del Rio squad who tallied a total of 40 points.  Leading the way for the 2016 District Champions varsity boys was Nathan Kowalski who was the runner-up individual champion crossing the finish line in second place with a time of 15:44.  Also earning individual medals were Sergio Hernandez who placed 3rd with a time of 15:45, Miguel Huitron who came in 5th with a time of 15:59 and Ryan Rodriguez who placed 6th with a time of 16:02.  Rounding out the district champions boys crew were Arturo Valdez who placed 11th with a time of 1:14, Homar Perez who came in 23rd with a time of 16:43 and Jacob Smith who came in 30th with a time of 17:00.

The Eagle Pass High School varsity boys and varsity girls cross country tems will now advance to compete in the prestigious and high caliber 201 UIL Region IV Cross Country Meet to be held in Corpus Christi, Texas on Saturday, October 29, 2016.
