The Eagle Pass Eagles varsity football team under the direction of head coach Tom Gonzalez will hit the road this coming Friday, October 28, 2016 with a trip to San Antonio, Texas to take on the playoff contending Southwest Dragons in a 7:30 PM District 29-6A encounter. The home standing Dragons will enter sporting an overall season record of 5-3 and a district mark of 3-2. The visiting Eagles will venture into this game sporting an overall season record of 4-4 and a district mark of 2-3.
The Southwest Dragons offensively will be led by their standout signal caller Tyrone Middleton # 6 by far their best player who is big, strong and explosive and must be tackled low.. Joining him in the backfield will be Jacob Vargas #32 and Eric Hernandez #33. The wingback is Marquis Jones #20 very athletic, fast a a good receiver. The tight ends will be Robert Cardenas #35 and Tommy Garay #85 both of whom are excellent blockers. The Dragons offensive line will be comprised by a very big unit led by their right tackle Steve Segura #63 their best lineman big and very explosive, right guard Roger Lara #76, center Joshua Martinez # 61, left guard Steven Ochoa #79 and left tackle Christian Adame#70.
Defensively the Dragons will feature a basic 3-4 with a cover 2 scheme. Steve Segura #63 will lineup as the nose guard, Chris Bernal #59 will be the defensive end and Robert Fuentes #81 will be the anchor end. The line backing crew will have Martin Torres #9 as the Willie backer, John Garcia #43 as the Bandit backer, Bostin Crisp #3 as the Pete backer and Jose Bautista as the Sam backer. The Dragons secondary will be patrolled by Sean Ruiz #28 and Marquis Jones #20 at the corners and John Bias #1 and Florentino Warfield #26 as the safeties. Warfield will also see plenty of action on the offensive side of the ball as a quarterback, and receiver. He is very athletic.
The Eagles will attempt to counter with their usually powerful patented running game that last week was pretty much held in check by the Laredo United defense. The Eagles offensive line will certainly have to step up their game to get the Eagles running game back to par and get the speedster Mark Venegas loose into the secondary and into the end zone. The Eagles will however have a new starting signal caller this week that will be announced at game time in place of the injured starter Ricky Medina, The Eagles receiving corps of Jose Riojas, Ricky Reyes and Isaac Perales will have to contribute more in this contest.
Defensively the Eagles front seven will simply have to stop the Dragons’ running attack with a relentless and aggressive attack, must wrap up; swarm to the ball carrier and inflict some punishing tackles. The Eagles secondary unit will need to provide run support and be ready for the Dragons aerial game as well and come up with a few turnovers.
