The Eagle Pass Eagles varsity football team under the direction of head coach Tom Gonzalez hit the road on Friday, October 28, 2016 with a trip to San Antonio, Texas to tangle with the playoff contending Southwest Dragons in a 7:30 PM District 29-6A encounter.  The home standing Dragons entered sporting an overall season record of 5-3 and a district mark of 3-2.  The visiting Eagles ventured into this game sporting an overall season record of 4-4 and a district mark of 2-3.  The injury plagued up and down season continues for the Eagle Pass Eagles as they fell to the Dragons by the final score of 35 to 21.

 

This game did not start out as planned as the home standing Dragons scored a touchdown on each of their first four offensive possessions of this game to take a commanding leading over the Eagles.  The first of which was a five play 67 scoring drive capped off with a 42 yard gallop to pay dirt by running back John Blatz with 10:17 showing on the first quarter clock. Cristobal Flores tacked on the point after to give the Dragons an early 7 to 0 lead.

 

The second score for the Dragons was a three play 81 yard scoring drive culminating with a 58 yard pass from Florentino Warfield to Robert Fuentes with 4:51 left in the opening period.  Cristobal Flores added the point after to extend the Dragons lead to 14 to 0.

 

The Dragons continued their scoring assault on their third series with a four play 69 yard scoring drive punctuated with a 68 yard dash to pay dirt by quarterback Tyrone Middleton right through the heart of the Eagles defense.  Cristobal Flores split the uprights with the point after to give the Dragons a 21 to 0 lead over the Eagles.

 

Midway through the second period the Dragons their fourth touchdown o the first half with a five play 68 yard scoring drive capped off with a 54 yard touchdown pass from Tyrone Middleton to Robert Fuentes with 5:55 left in the first half.  Cristobal Flores remained perfect in the point after department to extend the Dragons lead to a comfortable 28 to 0 lead.

 

With time winding down in the first half and the Eagles offense sputtering to get anything going, the Eagles defense managed to register the first points of the game when Eagles defensive back Kevin Garcia intercepted a Dragons pass and returned it 30 yards into the end zone with 2:01 left in the first half.  Eagles placekicker Jose Riojas converted the point after to close out the scoring in the first half with the Dragons taking a 28 to 7 lead over the Eagles into their halftime locker room/

Late in the third quarter the Eagles offense got going producing a time consuming 12play 58 yard scoring drive capped off with a five yard keeper by new quarterback Dee Andre Torres with only 42 seconds remaining in the third period. Ose Riojas added the point after to make the score Southwest 28 Eagle Pass 14.

 

After the ensuing kickoff it took the Dragons just one play from scrimmage to register their next score of the game with Tyrone Middleton sprinting 56 yards into the end zone with 30 seconds left in the third quarter. Cristobal Flores tacked on the point after to give the Dragons a 35 to 14 lead over the Eagles.

 

With time winding down in this game the valiant Eagles mounted a 12 play 89 yard scoring drive that culminated with an 8 yard keeper by quarterback Dee Andre Torres with 1:10 left in the game.  Jose Riojas’ point after closed out the scoring in this game as the Dragons came away with the 35 to 21 victory over the Eagle Pass Eagles.

 

The Eagle Pass Eagles will now close out their 2016 season next Friday, November 4, 2016 by entertaining none other than their oldest football rival the current district co-leading Del Rio Rams at the Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium in a 7:30 PM District 29-6A matchup which is also designated as the Eagle Pass High School’s 2016 Homecoming game. Eagle Pass Sports Central invites the public to come out and support the Eagles.
