Mavericks tame the

Laredo Nixon Mustangs 7 to 2

The C.C. Winn Mavericks’ varsity baseball squad under the tutelage of head baseball coach Gene Flores and assistant coaches Jesus Gomez and Gustavo Gonzalez ventured to Laredo, Texas on Tuesday, April 12, 20016 to square-off against the Laredo Nixon Mustangs in a vital 5:00 PM District 29-5A baseball diamond encounter.

The visiting Mavericks jumped out to the early lead tallying a lone run in the top half of the very first inning with Juan Garza reaching on a one out walk, Rica Gonzalez reached safely on a fielder’s choice, with two outs Javi Flores drew a base on balls to load the bases, Mickey Hernandez belted an RBI single to drive in Juan Garza with the first run of the game.

The home standing Nixon Mustangs countered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second to take a 2 to 1 lead over the Mavericks on a pair of base hits and one Mavericks error.  But the proud Mavericks regained the lead with a pair of runs of teir own in the top of the fifth inning with Ruben Esquivel leading off the frame with a single, Juan Garza successfully sacrificed Ruben Esquivel over to second with a well placed bunt, Mavs starting pitcher Rica Gonzalez helped his own cause by blasting an RBI double to drive in Ruben Esquivel with the game tying run, Rey Lopez walked, with two outs Mickey Hernandez came through with a clutch RBI single to deliver Rica Gonzalez home with the go ahead run giving the Mavericks a 3 to 2 lead over the Mustangs.

After giving up those two runs in the second Mavericks ace hurler Rica Gonzalez settled into a groove on the mound and was simply unhittable the rest of the and was supported by a very solid Mavericks defense.

In the top half of the seventh and final inning of play the Mavericks secured the victory with a four run outburst with Rica Gonzalez igniting the rally with a titanic solo homerun to lead off the frame, with one out Javi Flores walked, Mickey Hernandez connected with an RBI double to bring home Javi Flores, Julio Ruiz delivered Mickey Hernandez home courtesy of a sacrifice fly, with two outs Meme Hernandez drew a base on balls, Mavericks catcher Noah Garcia delivered the final blow with a clutch two out RBI double which brought Meme Hernandez home on the play giving the Mavericks a 7 to 2 lead over the Laredo Nixon Mustangs.

The Mustangs then went down quietly in the bottom of the seventh enabling the C.C. Winn Mavericks to come away with the well earned 7 to 2 victory with Rica Gonzalez going the distance to earn the pitching victory.
