The C.C. Winn Mavericks and Lady Mavericks varsity boys & girls track and field teams ventured to Laredo, Texas on Thursday, April 14, 2016 to compete in the 2016 District 29-5A Track and Field Meet held at Shirley Field where both squads made an impressive showing both team wise and individually.  The Lady Mavericks under the direction of head coach Sarah J. Gonzalez finished a very respectable third place in the overall team competition with a total of 78 points while the Mavericks varsity boys mentored by head coach Apolinar T. Garza finished tied for third place in the overall team competition with a total of 82 points.

VARSITY GIRLS DIVISION:

The relatively youthful Lady Mavericks garnered two individual gold medals, three silver medals and two bronze medals at the district meet. Harvesting the gold medals were Joann Jimenez who crossed the finish line first in the 400 Meter dash with a winning time of 1:01.05 and teammate Leonor Ramirez in the Triple Jump with a winning leap of 34’ 9”.  Earning the silver medals were Maribel Ramirez in the Discus Throw with a distance of 108’ 10”, the talented 4×20 Meter relay squad of Karina Sauceda, Martha Martinez, Priscilla Martinez and anchored by Joann Jimenez who crossed the finish line second in that event with a time of 1:49.32 and Stephanie Ramirez in the High Jump crossing the bar at a height of 4’ 10”.  Bringing home the bronze medals were The 4×400 Meter Relay quartet of Joann Jimenez, Karina Sauceda, Martha Martinez, and anchored by Krystal Vasquez who placed third in that prestigious event with a time of 4:20.83 and Leonor Ramirez who came in third the Long Jump with a leap of 15’ 10”.  All of these individual Lady Mavericks have earned the right to compete in the elite upcoming UIL Region IV Class 5A Area Track & Field Meet to be held in Laredo Texas on April 21-23, 2016 for the right to compete and earn a berth in the high caliber UIL Region IV Track & Field Meet to be held in San Antonio, Texas on April 28-30, 2016.

Also earning a berth in the upcoming UI Region IV Class 5A Area Meet is Martha Martinez who placed fourth in Long Jump with a distance of 15’ 9 ½”.

VARSITY BOYS DIVISION:

The Mavericks varsity boys brought home three gold medals, two silver medals and one bronze medal from the 2016 District 29-5A Track & Field Meet.  Capturing the gold medals were Mavericks highly talented strong man Carlos Tijerina who placed first in his specialty the Discus Throw with a winning distance of 146’ 7”, Mariano Hernandez in the 400 Meter Dash crossing the finish line first with a time of 50.61 and the 4×400 Meter Relay crew of Mariano Hernandez, Alfonso Vallejo, Mark Reyna and anchored by Miguel Rendon who won that prestigious event with a winning time of 3:28.42. Earning the silver medals was Omar Hinojosa in the Pole Vault placing second at a height of 11’ 6” and Marc Reyna in the 200 Meter Dash with a very respectable time of 22.03.  garnering the bronze medal was Miguel Rendon who came in third in the 800 Meter Run with a time of2:03,24. All of these individual young Mavericks have earned the right to compete in the elite upcoming UIL Region IV Class 5A Area Track & Field Meet to be held in Laredo Texas on April 21-23, 2016 for the right to compete and earn a berth in the high caliber UIL Region IV Track & Field Meet to be held in San Antonio, Texas on April 28-30, 2016.

Also earning a berth in the upcoming UIL Region Class 5A Area Meet are Yosio Limon who came in fourth in the 800 meter Run with a time of 2:03.53 and carlos Tijerina who placed fourth in the Shot Put with a heave of 43’ 04”
