The 2016 edition of the Eagle Pass Lady Eagles varsity girls’ softball team have just etched their mark in the all-time local athletic history book by clinching their sixth consecutive outright district softball championship carrying on the rich tradition of the storied 23 year Eagle Pass Lady Eagles softball program. The current district leading Eagle Pass Lady Eagles varsity girls’ softball team entertained the Laredo Alexander Lady Bulldogs on Friday, April 15, 2016 in a 5:00 PM District 29-6A softball matchup at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center softball field. The visiting Laredo Alexander Lady Bulldogs entered this game currently tied for third place in the district race with Laredo United both of whom are sporting a 4-4 district mark while the district leading Eagle Pass Lady Eagles came in with an unblemished district record of 8-0.
Supported by their Loyal Legion of Lady Eagles softball faithful the highly touted Eagle Pass Lady Eagles varsity girls softball team defeatedthe Laredo Alexander Lady Bulldogs by the final score of 11 to 4 behind the pitching of their young talented freshman pitcher Kaitlin Galvan who remains undefeated with a pitching record of 9-0 inside the circle in district play and the powerful hitting Lady Eagles lineup who pounded out 10 hits in the game.
The sixth consecutive district crown equals the record set by the Eagle Pass High School varsity baseball teams of the early 1970’s thus becoming the only two programs to ever win six consecutive district champions in Eagle Pass High School athletic history.
Knowing quite well what was stake the powerful Lady Eagles came out with a mission and erupted with a huge six run production in the home half of the first inning with Melanie Mendoza leading off the frame with a walk and immediately stole second, with one out Heather Ruiz also drew a walk, freshman stellar catcher and cleanup batter Brooke Diaz blasted an RBI double to bring home Melanie Mendoza one of four senior class players playing in her final home game with the first run of the game, with two outs Janessa Garza stroked a two RBI single to drive in Heather Ruiz and courtesy runner Lysandra Gonzalez, Nina Flores another one of four senior class members playing in her final home game connected with a solid RBI double to bring home Janessa Garza, Anna Aguado followed with an RBI single to drive in Nina Flores, Leslie Martinez reached safely on an error enabling Anna Aguado to come around to score on the play giving the Lady Eagles a 6 to 0 lead over the Lady Bulldogs.
To their credit the visiting up and coming relatively young Laredo Alexander lady Bulldogs responded with a four run outburst in the top half of the second inning on four hits one sacrifice and an Eagle Pass error to narrow their deficit to only two runs. But the Lady Eagles made sure that this would be the only damage the Lady Bulldogs would generate the rest of the game as they continued to feast on the Lady Bulldogs pitching and implemented a stingy and suffocating defense.
The proud Lady Eagles quickly got three of those runs in the bottom of the fourth with Sairah Gonzalez also one of the four senior class members playing in her final home game reaching on an error and Heather Ruiz was issued a base on balls, Brooke Diaz also arrived safely on an error to load the bases for the reliable Amanda Appleton one of the four senior class members playing in her last home game of a brilliant four year career came through with a ringing two RBI single to bring home Sairah Gonzalez and heather Ruiz but courtesy runner Lysandra Gonzalez was thrown out at third on the play, Janessa Garza reached safely on an Error enabling Amanda Appleton to come around to score on the play giving the Lady Eagles a 9 to 4 lead.
Meanwhile the stellar all-freshman pitching and catching duo of Kaitlin Galvan and Brooke Diaz who all year long have been working in sync continued their mastery of the opposing batters and enjoyed the benefits of the Lady Eagles heavy hitting and high scoring offense as well as a rock solid defense.
For good measure the Eagle Pass Lady Eagles sealed the outcome of this key encounter with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning with Janessa Garza and Nina Flores belting back to back two out singles, Anna Aguado followed with a clutch two out two RBI double to drive in both Janessa Garza and Nina Flores to give the Lady Eagles an 11 to 4 lead over the lady Bulldogs
