The 2016 District 29-6A softball champion Eagle Pass Lady Eagle’ varsity girls softball team ventured to Del Rio, Texas, on Tuesday, April 19, 2016 to face off against their longtime rivals the Del Rio Queens who are currently perched in second place in the district race in a 7:00 PM regular and district season finale. The visiting Eagle Pass Lady Eagles entered this game with an unblemished 9-0 district record while the home standing Del Rio Queens came in with a district mark of 6-3. But as has been proven throughout the storied history of the Eagle Pass-Del Rio softball series records do not matter to these two teams as they always battle each other hard from the game’s opening pitch until the final out is recorded. Both teams certainly play with plenty of pride and dignity and under the good sportsmanship rules of play. For the fourth year in a row the powerful Eagle Pass Lady Eagles culminate their district season undefeated with the sound 8 to 1 defeat of the Del Rio Queens.
With the district title already secured the visiting Lady Eagles had only one goal left on their agenda and that was to finish the seson undefeated in district play for the fourth consecutive year. The Lady Eagles wasted no time in taking the lead in this district finale with a three run output in the top of the very first inning with leadoff batter Melanie Mendoza drawing a walk and immediately stole second, Sairah Gonzalez followed with an RBI single to bring home Melanie Mendoza with the first run of the game, heather Ruiz stroked an RBI double to drive in Sairah Gonzalez, cleanup batter Brooke Diaz was issued a base on balls, aAmanda Appleton reached on a fielder’s choice enabling courtesy runner Lysandra Gonzalez to score on the play.
In the top of the second the Lady Eagles tacked on a lone run with Melanie Mendoza belting a single and once again stealing second, Sairah Gonzalez laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Melanie Mendoza over to third, Heather Ruiz connected with a two out RBI double to bring home Melanie Mendoza giving the Lady Ragles a 4 to 0 lead over the Queens.
The Lady Eagles added yet another lone run in the top of the fourth inning with pinch hitter Miryam Salinas issued a one out walk, Heather Ruiz followed with a single, pinch hitter Kayla Ochoa slapped a solid RBI single to drive in Miryam Salinas.
In the top of the sixth the Lady Eagles continued to change the scoreboard by plating another lone run with Sairah Gonzalez leading off the frame with a single, with one out, Brooke Diaz arrived safely on a Del Rio error enabling Sairah Gonzalez to score on the play to extend the Lady Eagles lead to 7 to 0 over the Queens.
The home standing Del Rio Queens finally got on the score board with a lone run in the bottom of the sixth off of Lady Eagles relief hurler Kaitlin Galvan who replaced starting pitcher Leenette Krezdorn who hurled three complete scoreless innings before being replaced by Kaitlin Galvan who eventually be credited with her 10th pitching victory in district play with no losses..
The Lady Eagles then proceeded to put the icing on the cake with yet another lone run in the top of the seventh and final inning of play with Anna Aguado reaching on a fielding error and promptly stole second, with one out Melanie Mendoza came through with an RBI single to drive in Anna Aguado with the 8th and final run of this contest giving the Lady Eagles the sound 8 to 1 victory over their long time rivals and accomplished their mission of finishing the season undefeated on district play.
Eagle Pass Sports Central congratulates the mighty Eagle Pass Lady Eagles varsity girls’ softball team on your outstanding achievement in win winning the distrci softball championship for the sixth year in a row. The victorious Eagle Pass Lady Eagles thus culminate another district season undefeated for the fourth consecutive season; during their six consecutive district championship titles they have amassed a mind boggling 78-2 district record. The mighty Lady Eagles will now venture into the post season for the 18th time in school history and for the 15th consecutive year. Eagle Pass Sports Central wish the powerful and highly talented Eagle Pass Lady Eagles varsity girls softball team the very best of luck during the post season.
