The playoff bound C.C. Winn Lady Mavericks’ varsity girls’ softball team under the direction of head coach J.J. Iracheta, Jr. and assistant coaches Heriberto Roiz, Corina Escontrias, Tony Martinez and Johnny Hernandez currently perched in third place in the district race culminated their 2016 regular and district softball season with a road trip to Somerset Texas, on Tuesday, April 19, 2016 to tangle with the tough District 29-5A softball champion Somerset Lady Bulldogs in a 7:00 PM regular and district season finale.
The visiting Lady Mavericks jumped out to the early lead against the powerful district champion Lady Bulldogs with a lone run in the top half of the very first inning off of the famed Somerset starting pitcher Kayla Kerr one of the true premier high school softball pitchers in the entire State of Texas. With one out Alyssa Lopez reached on a dropped third strike, stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. Giselle Cerda grounded out to second base but enabled Alyssa Lopez to score on the play giving the Lady Mavericks a 1 to 0 lead over the heavily favorite Somerset Lady Bulldogs.
Young Lady Mavericks’ starting pitcher Marychelo Flores went toe to toe inside the circle against the very potent and high scoring Lady Bulldogs. Marychelo stunned the home standing Lady Bulldogs and their fans in attendance hurling four complete scoreless inning against the usually high scoring Lady Bulldogs scattering just three harmless hits through four innings of play with the Lady Mavericks still holding the slim 1 to 0 lead in this game.
In the bottom of the fifth however, the Somerset Lady Bulldogs took the lead with a three run output on only two hits, two walks, one hit batsman and one costly throwing error to take a 3 to 1 lead over the Lady Mavericks.
The proud youthful Lady Mavericks answered back in the top of the sixth inning with Giselle Cerda leading off the frame with a base on balls, with one out, Lady Mavs starting pitcher Marychelo Flores boomed a fence rattling RBI triple to bring home Giselle Cerda home all the way from first to narrow the Lady Mavericks deficit to only one run.. With the potential game tying run now perched at third, Lady Luck was just not on the Lady Mavericks side on this night as the next two batters lined out and grounded out respectively leaving Marychelo Flores stranded at third.
In the top of the seventh the Lady Mavericks unfortunately were retired in order enabling the district champion Somerset Lady Bulldogs to barely escape with a slim 3 to 2 victory over the valiant C.C. Winn Lady Mavericks who truly deserved a much better fate but nevertheless the mighty C.C Lady Mavericks finished in third place in District 29-5A and thus have earned a berth in the upcoming UIL Region IV Class 5A bi-district round of the post season playoffs against an opponent yet to be determined.
