The playoff contending Eagle Pass Eagles varsity boys’ baseball team under the leadership of head coach Reynol Mendoza and assistant coaches Henry Silva and Chris Villa ventured to Laredo, Texas on Tuesday, April 19. 2016 to tangle with their longtime nemesis the Laredo United Longhorns in a key 7:00 PM District 29-6A baseball diamond matchup at venerable Kruger Field. This game pitted the district’s current number 3 team Eagles taking on the current number 2 team Laredo United Longhorns. The game got underway with a brilliant scoreless pitching duel through three complete innings of play when the stadium lights at Krueger Field went off. Futile attempts to get the lights turned back on failed so the Eagles would have to make a return trip to Laredo, Texas the next day to resume their game with the Longhorns with a 5:00 PM start. For the second time this season the mighty Eagles have defeated the Laredo United Longhorns to take the three game season series two games to one with a thrilling 3 to 2 victory.
When play resumed on Wednesday afternoon the visiting Eagle Pass Eagles managed to break the scoreless tie with a lone run in the top half of the fourth inning with young Eagles designated hitter Eriq Gomez leading off the frame with a single, pinch runner Alex Luna then scampered to second courtesy of a wild pitch, Orly Martinez laid down a sacrifice bunt to enable Alex Luna to take third on the play. Freshman pitcher Rey Mendoza who took over the pitching duties from Tuesday night’s starter Jorge Rodriguez came through with a clutch RBI single to drive in Alex Luna with the first run of the game.
The home standing United Longhorns also broke into the scoring column in the bottom of the fourth with a lone run of their own on a fielder’s choice and three base on balls to knot up the score at one run apiece,
The mighty Eagle Pass eagles quickly regained the lead in the top of the fifth with a two out solo blast over the wall by Mando Lopez who for four years has been one of the very few feared hitters in the district to give the Eagles a 2 to 1 lead over the Longhorns.
As has been the case in the majority of the games throughout the storied series between these two famed high school baseball programs, the Longhorns struck right back with a game tying lone run in the bottom of the fifth on a two out double and an RBI single.
Never fear the tradition rich Eagle Pass Eagles who throughout their storied history have been known to knock several highly State and Nationally ranked high school baseball teams countered right back with a go ahead lone run in the top of the sixth with Dee Andre Torres reaching on a walk, Eriq Gomez sacrificed Torres over to second, with two outs right fielder Rey Mendoza connected with a solid RBI single to drive in Dee Andre Torres with the go ahead run.
Meanwhile Eagles reliever Tony Galvan who took over the mound duties from Rey Mendoza in the bottom of the sixth closed the door with two solid scoreless innings of relief work including retiring the heart of the Longhorns lineup in the bottom of the seventh on a soft liner to third and a pair of strikeouts to give the Eagle Pass Eagles the well earned 3 to 2 victory over the Laredo United Longhorns.
