The C.C. Winn Mavericks varsity baseball team under the guidance of head coach Gene Flores and assistant coaches Jesus Gomez and Gustavo Gonzalez continued with their District 29-5A baseball diamond battles on Friday, April 22, 2016 by entertaining the San Antonio Southside Cardinals on a 5:00 PM encounter at the Leopoldo “Polo” Moncada Baseball Field at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center.

The visiting Cardinals tallied a pair of runs in the top of the first inning on two walks, a hit batsman, a sacrifice fly and only one hit to take the early lead but that would be the only output they would mount the rest of the game.  The home standing Mavericks quickly countered with a lone run in the home half of the first with Juan Garza drawing a one out walk and stealing second and third,  Rica Gonzalez hit a slow grounded out to first enabling Juan Garza to race home on the play.

In the bottom of the second the proud Mavericks erased their one run deficit with a two run output with Javy Flores reaching on a one out error, Ernesto Villasenor blasted an RBI triple to drive in Javy Flores with the game tying run, Mavericks second baseman Julio Ruiz followed with a solid RBI single to bring home Ernesto Villasenor with the go ahead run giving the Mavericks a 3 to 2 lead over the Cardinals.

With the Mavericks Nation in attendance cheering their hearts out, their beloved Mavericks blew this game wide open with a huge nine run uprising.  Rica Gonzalez led off the frame reaching on an error, Rey Lopez and Mike Hernandez drew back to back walks to load the bases, Javy Flores connected with a two RBI single to bring home Rida Gonzalez and Rey Lopez, with one out Julio Ruiz reached on an error allowing Mike Hernandez to score on the play, Manuel Hernandez reached on an error. Ruben Esquivel stroked an RBI single to drive in Javy Flores; Juan Garza reached on a fielder’s choice with Julio Ruiz scoring on the play, Rica Gonzalez walked to bring home Manuel Hernandez, with two outs Mike Hernandez came through with a clutch two RBI single to bring home Ruben Esquivel and Juan Garza, Javy Flores provided the exclamation point with a solid RBI single to drive in Rica Gonzalez with the 9th run of the inning to extend the Mavericks lead to a comfortable 12 to 2 lead over the Cardinals.

In the bottom of the fourth the Mavericks enforced the 10 run run plating a pair of runs with Mavericks starting pitcher Ruben Esquivel igniting the two out rally with a single, Juan Garza reached courtesy of an infield hit, Rica Gonzalez connected with an RBI single to bring home Ruben Esquivel, Rey Lopez followed with an RBI single of his own two deliver Juan Garza home with the 14th and final run for the Mavericks.

Mavericks starting and winning pitcher Ruben Esquivel closed the door on the Cardinals in the top of the fifth giving the Mavericks the well earned 14 to 2 victory over the Cardinals with Esquivel hurling five complete inning to earn the pitching victory allowing just 2 runs on 4 base hits and struck out 6 batters in this game.
