The C.C. Winn Mavericks’ varsity baseball team hosted the Laredo Martin Tigers on Tuesday, April 19, 2016 in a key and vital 7:00 PM matchup at the Leopoldo “Polo” Moncada Baseball Field at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity.
Needing a victory over the visiting the Tigers the game just did not start out as planned as the visiting Tigers tallied what proved to be their only four runs of this game in the top half of the very first inning to take the early 4 to 0 lead over the Mavericks.
In the bottom of the first the Mavericks cut into their deficit with a lone run with Ruben Esquivel leading off the frame with a single, with one out Rica Gonzalez reached on an error by the Laredo Martin right fielder which enabled Ruben Esquivel to come around to score on the play.
The rest of the game turned into a scoreless pitching duel between the Laredo Martin starting pitcher and Mavericks reliever Rica Gonzalez who replaced starting pitcher Ruben Esquivel in the first inning. The game remained 4 to 1 in favor of the Laredo martin Tigers all the way to the bottom of the seventh and final inning where the Mavericks came to bat needing 3 runs to tie the game or 4 runs to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat,
Supported by the loyal Mavericks Nation in attendance Noah Garcia belted a single to get the frame started, Ruben Esquivel was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second, with one out Rica Gonzalez belted a two RBI double to bring home Noah Garcia and Ruben Esquivel to narrow the Mavericks deficit to only one run, Rica Gonzalez advanced to third on a wild pitch, Rey Lopez drew a walk to put the potential game tying run at third and the potential game winning run at first. But Lady Luck was not on the Mavericks side this evening as the next two batters were retired allowing the Laredo Martin Tigers to escape with the narrow 4 to 3 victory over the valiant Mavericks that deserved a better fate.
