Mavericks take season finale over

The C.C. Winn Mavericks’ varsity baseball team under the leadership of head coach Gene Flores and assistant coaches Jesus Gomez and Gustavo Gonzalez culminated their respective 2016 high school baseball season on Friday, April 29, 2016 with a road trip to Laredo Texas to tangle with the Laredo Cigarroa Toros in a 7:00 PM District and regular season finale.  The visiting Mavericks came into this season finale with a slim chance to advance into the post season needing a victory over the Toros and for the Southside Cardinals to defeat the Somerset Bulldogs in order to force a tie breaking game against Somerset for the fourth and final playoff spot.  Well sports fans the Mavericks took care of their end with a sound 7 to 2 victory over the Toros but unfortunately the season came to an end as Somerset defeat Southside 12 to 6 to earn the fourth and final post season playoff spot.

The visiting Mavericks wasted no time in taking the lead in this contest with a lone run in the bottom of the first inning with Mavs second baseman Julio Ruiz belting a one out double and came home on an RBI single off the bat of Rica Gonzalez to give the Mavs the early 1 to 0 lead over the Toros.  In the top of the second the Mavericks tacked on another lone run with Javy Flores stroking a double to lead off the frame, with one out Juan Garza reached on an error enabling Javy Flores to come around to score from second.

In the top of the third the Mavericks continued their scoring production with a pair of runs with Julio Ruiz leading off the frame with a solid single. Rica Gonzalez grounded out to first but Julio Ruiz scampered over to second on the play, with one out Rey Lopez stroked an RBI double to bring home Julio Ruiz, Mike Hernandez came through with an RBI single to drive in Rey Lopez to extend the Mavericks lead to 4 to 0 over the Toros.

The home standing Toros finally got on the scoreboard with one lone run in the bottom of the third but the proud Mavericks quickly countered with another pair of runs in the top half of the fifth inning.  Javy Flores led off the frame with a single, With two outs Jorge Romero reached on an error, Ruben Esquivel walked to load the base for Julio Ruiz who had a very productive night at the plate coming through with his third base hit of this game to bring home Javy Flores and Jorge Romero extending the Mavericks lead to 6 to 1 over the Toros.

Laredo Cigarroa added a lone unearned run in the bottom of the fifth but that proved be the final run they would tally on this night.  The Mavericks got that run back in the top half of the sixth inning with Rey Lopez belting a one out single and later came around to score on an infield hit off the bat of Mike Hernandez to give the mighty Mavericks the well earned 7 to 2 victory with Ruben Esquivel recording the pitching victory for the Mavericks who culminate their 2016 season with an overall season record of 11-13-1.
