The Eagle Pass Eagles varsity boys’ baseball team mentored by head coach Reynol Mendoza and assistant coaches Henry Silva and Chris Villa opened their quest for the 2016 UIL Region IV Class 6A bi-district baseball crown on Friday, May 6, 2016 with a best of three series against the La Joya Palmview Lobos with a 7:30 PM series opener at the United ISD Student Activity Center. The Eagle Pass Eagles the District 29-6A’s third place representative ventured into this series sporting an overall season record of 11-16 while the La Joya Palmview Lobos the District 30-6A”s second place representative came in with an overall season record of 16-9-1. After winning a thrilling extra inning series opener on a dramatic pinch hit two run homerun off the bat of Braulio Rodriguez, the Eagle Pass Eagles 2016 baseball season has come to an end by virtue of back to back losses on Saturday by the respective scores of 9 to 4 and 10 to 0.
GAME 1
The opening game of the best of three series turned out to be quite an extra inning thriller between the Eagles and Lobos. The La Joya Palmview Lobos who were the designated visiting team for this game took the early lead courtesy of a tow run home run off the bat of their cleanup batter Cesar Rosales who would wind up with a phenomenal performance at the plate in the three game series.
In the bottom of the fourth the proud Eagles countered with a pair of runs to knot up the score at two all. Dee Andre Torres led off the frame with a single, Jorge Rodriguez also connected with a single, Eriq Gomez followed with another single to load the bases but was quickly picked off at first, with one out Rey Mendoza reached on an error enabling Dee Andre Torres to score on the play, Mendoza and pinch runner Alex Luna pulled off a double steal with Mendoza swiping second and Luna stealing home with the game tying run.
The La Joya Palmview Lobos regained the lead with a lone run in the top half of the fifth but the Eagles quickly knotted up the score again with a lone run of their own in the bottom of the fifth with Erykk Fuentes drawing a base on balls, Mando Lopez followed with a single, Olexis Gutierrez reached on a fielder’s choice with Erykk Fuentes forced out at third, Dee Andre Torres walked and Jorge Rodriguez reached on a fielder’s choice but Mando Lopez came home on the play with the game tying run,
The rest of the game was in the hands of Eagles starting pitcher Tony Galvan who held the Lobos scoreless into extra innings. In the bottom of the 10th inning Dee Andre Torres led off the frame reaching on an error, with one out pinch hitter Braulio Rodriguez came up to the plate and became an instant hero as he blasted the first pitch he saw over the fence for a game winning two run home run to give the jubilant Eagles a 5 to 3 victory over the Lobos. Tony Galvan earned the pitching victory hurling all 10 innings allowing 3 runs, surrendered 10 base hits and struck out 8 batters.

Winning Pitcher: Tony Galvan Leading Hitters: Braulio Rodriguez 1 for 1 with 1 run scored and 2 RBI’s on a game winning two run homerun in the 10th inning, Eriq Gomez 1 for 2, Ricky Medina 1 for 2, Dee Andre Torres 1 for 3 with 2 runs scored, Jorge Rodriguez 1 for 5 with 1 RBI, Mando Lopez 2 for 5 with 1 run scored and Alex Luna 1 run scored.
GAME 2
Saturday pitted the Eagles and Lobos at 1:00 PM in game 2 of the best of three series. The Eagles took the lead in this contest with a lone run in the top of the first inning with Dee Andre Torres stroking a one out single; Jorge Rodriguez delivered Dee Andre home by blasting an RBI triple.
In the bottom of the first the Lobos took the lead plating 4 runs in that frame taking full advantage of four Eagle Pass errors and only one base hit then tacked on a lone run in the bottom of the second on another Eagle Pass error and a sacrifice fly.
The Eagles answered with a pair of runs in the top of the third with Olexis Gutierrez blasting a one out solo home run, Dee Andre Torres drew a walk and advanced to second on a ground out, Rey Mendoza followed with a solid RBI single to bring home Dee Andre Torres to narrow the Eagles deficit to 5 to 3. The Eagles then tacked on a lone run in the top of fourth with Erykk Fuentes reaching on a hit by pitch and then scampering over to second on a wild pitch and came home on a two out RBI double off the bat of Dee Andre Torres.
In the bottom of the fourth the Lobos increase their lead courtesy of a two run home run off the bat of their power hitting catcher Cesar Rosales to extend their lead to 7 to 4. In the bottom of the sixth inning the Lobos sealed their victory with another two run homerun by their catcher Cesar Rosales giving the La Joya Palmview Lobos the 9 to 4 victory over the Eagle Pass Eagles to even the series at one game apiece.

GAME 3
The third and decoding game of this series just did not go as planned as the La Joya Palmview Lobos quickly settled the eventual outcome of this contest with a huge seven run out highlighted by guess what yes another two run homerun by Lobos catcher Cesar Rosales. The Lobos brought an early conclusion to this contest as well as the series with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second and a lone run in the bottom of the third to enforce the ten run rule on the valiant Eagles who only managed to get one base hit that coming off the bat of the four year standout Mando Lopez who closes out a truly brilliant four year career with the Eagle Pass Eagles as the Eagles were eliminated by the Lobos with the final score of 10 to 0 to take the series 2 games to 1. The Eagles close out the year with an overall season record of 12-17.
*For the three game series Palmview Lobos catcher Cesar Rosalez went 7 for 9 at the plate, belted 4 homeruns and had 9 RBI’s
