Well sports aficionados, today is the day that all local and State wide high school football enthusiasts have been waiting for as the formerly known two a day work outs began bright an early Monday morning. While the majority of the local residents were getting ready to start a new week of going to work and eating their respective hearty breakfast, the C.C. Winn Mavericks coaching staff under the direction of head coach Eric Villasenor and the Eagle Pass Eagles coaching staff under the guidance of head coach Tom Gonzalez were already out on their respective campus practice football fields.
Both coaching staffs were welcoming back several returning players, lettermen and newcomers at 7:00 am sharp to commence their traditional season opening condition drills as well as teaching their football assignments for the upcoming 2016 Texas High School football season with the expectations that the majority of the respective players showing up in some sort of good conditioning. But of course, as usual, a few will suffer the consequences of living the life of leisure during all of June and July of staying up late to the wee hours of the morning and mijito waking up around 3:00 pm to play video games all afternoon. True to form, a few players were really huffing and puffing and struggling almost immediately during the conditioning drills.
During the first of two daily sessions, the players were paced through numerous conditioning stations by their respective coaches. Players were monitored extensively throughout the conditioning session and were allotted several water breaks by the respective head trainers and their staff due to the excessive heat currently plaguing the majority of South Texas.
After a one hour break, the second session was mostly teaching, with the Eagles and Mavericks coaching staff implementing their respective first phase of their offensive and defensive game plans that they plan to use during their respective 2016 season. The conditioning drills will continue through Thursday. Friday will be the first day of contact with the players donning their entire football gear for the first time in 2016.
Saturday morning will see the Mavericks and Eagles take the field to conduct a series of intra squad scrimmages to see where the players stand and battle for a staring position and look over the newcomers to see how they perform in game like action. This will enable the coaching staffs to better evaluate who will fill out their respective 2016 Varsity, Junior Varsity and Freshman football rosters.
The Mavericks had a whopping total of 168 players show up this morning and are expecting to peak around 185 as a few players have not completed their physicals or were out of town. The Eagles had a total of 118 players show up this morning and they too were missing several players and are expected to peak around 135.
Both the Eagles and Mavericks have a little less than two weeks to get ready for their respective first of two scheduled scrimmages where they will give their respective fans, supporters and faithful followers a sneak preview of coming attractions. The Eagles are scheduled to scrimmage against the Somerset Bulldogs on Friday, August 12, 2016 but the site and time have not been determined. The Mavericks will hit the road on Friday, August 12, 2016 with a trip to Laredo, Texas to scrimmage against the Laredo Nixon Mustangs in a 7:00 PM gridiron matchup at Shirley Field.
Excitement is in the air throughout the community as well as the local coffee shop quarterback clubs as the long awaited Texas High School football season is now officially underway. Eagle Pass Sports Central invites the entire community to support both the C.C. Winn Mavericks and Eagle Pass Eagles throughout the entire 2016 season as they both proudly represent the City of Eagle Pass, Texas as well as Maverick County.
