With the much anticipated Texas High School Football season opener just 11 days away both the Eagle Pass Eagles and C.C. Winn Mavericks will give their faithful Mavericks Nation and Legion of Eagles fans one final preview of coming attractions as they each conduct their second and final scrimmage starting this coming Thursday.
The Eagle Pass Eagles host the Laredo Martin Tigers mentored by former Eagle Passan David Charles who will bring his troops to town for a 6:00 pm matchup at the Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium. Like all scrimmages neither team will show you their real game plan that will be used in their upcoming season opener and throughout the rest of the season. In all scrimmages teams basically run a couple of basic running and passing plays mainly to see how the upcoming freshmen and junior varsity as well as letterman do against varsity level competition so contrary to what the abundant coffee shop quarterback clubs say you really do win nor lose a scrimmage.
Last week the Eagles scrimmaged against the Somerset Bulldogs who featured their highly touted quarterback who is committed to LSU. Both teams managed to score one touchdown apiece but there were some bright spots such as the patented Eagles running game with standout tailback Mark Venegas tallying on a 73 yard gallop to pay dirt and the aggressiveness of the much improved Eagles defensive front line. Yes of course there were a few things that still need some minor adjustments such as the Eagles passing game and more consistency on both sides of the ball but rest assure come next Friday Night’s season opener the Eagles will be ready.
The C.C. Winn Mavericks will hit the road this Friday for their second scrimmage when they journey to Laredo, Texas to take on the Laredo United South Panthers who are expected to be one of the top teams in District 29-6A this season. The Mavericks and Panthers will battle starting at 7:00 PM at the Laredo United ISD Student Activity Center.
Last week the Mavericks also ventured to Laredo, Texas to tangle with the veteran and playoff experienced Laredo Nixon Mustangs who managed to outscore the Mavericks 3 to 0 (Scrimmages are scored by the number of touchdowns not total points). But the bright spots for the Mavericks were their massive offensive line who was laying down some serious blocking way down field to spring their patented running game loose into the Mustangs secondary. The Mavericks did have two huge 70+ yard runs deep into the red zone called back by questionable penalties by the local Laredo officials. The Mavericks passing game had a few bright spots but still needs some fine tuning. The Mavericks coaching got the opportunity to evaluate the upcoming young freshmen, junior varsity and letterman that got plenty of playing time during this scrimmage.
On defense the Mavericks potential starting front seven pressured the Mustangs talented starting quarterback throughout their only series on the field managing to sack the quarterback several times as they simply over powered the experienced Laredo Nixon offensively line. The Mavericks do however need to fine tune their containment but rest assure by next Friday’s season opener the Mavericks will be ready to showcase their entire offensive and defensive package.
The Mavericks also scrimmaged against the Carrizo Springs Wildcats last Friday for one quarter of play with both teams scoring one touchdown apiece with Mavericks tailback Mark Hinojosa scoring from 10 yards out.
