Not all of the thrilling volleyball action was taking place at the Copacabana Beach in Brazil. Here on the local front the C.C. Winn Lady Mavericks under the direction of head coach Corina Escontrias and assistant coach Erika Rodriguez entertained their cross town rivals the Eagle Pass Lady Eagles mentored by their new head volleyball coach the former Lady Eagles two sport standout Izaneli Mancha and assistant coach Larissa Gonzalez in their annual 7:00 PM non-district volleyball match on Wednesday, August 17, 2016 at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center Arena.
The action in this local friendly rivalry volleyball match reminisced that of the Team USA vs, Brazil women’s beach volleyball semifinals match up at the Olympics as both teams came out on fire in the opening set both offensively and defensively as the two teams battled with plenty of pride, dignity and heart. The lead exchanged hands back and forth with both teams employing powerful serves sensational defensive play and registering numerous kills benefitting from pin point sets. The Lady Mavericks who were the designated home team for this encounter finally prevailed in the grueling opening set by the hard fought score of 30 to 28.
The second set of this match was equally as exciting as the first as both team continued to play at a high level and with plenty of intensity with the famed Mavericks Nation and Legion of Lady Eagles fans cheering their respective teams at a post season playoff berth fever frenzy. Back and forth the second set went before the Lady Eagles came back to not up this match at one set at piece by taking the second set by the slim margin of 25 to 23.
During the break in between sets both coaching staffs began to insert a few subs since this was a non-district match seeking to find the overall right combination to their lineup. The Lady Eagles began to rely heavily on their two most experienced players in Lysandra Gonzalez and Miryam Salinas and they each responded quite well with Lysandra registering a team high 11 kills with 2 blocks and Miryam pitched in with 9 kills and a team high 4 blocks. Teammate Giselle Vasquez led the team with a whopping 24 digs I this match and Kayla Sepulveda registered a team high 15 assists enabling the Lady Eagles to close out this match by taking the next two sets by the respective scores of 25-18 and 25-15 to take the match three sets to one over a truly valiant Lady Mavericks squad that battled til the final point.
The Lady Mavericks employed a near perfect service game throughout this match led by Annette Jimenez who was a perfect 19 for 19 in the service department, Kimberley Rodriguez led the team with 3 blocks and teammate Estefany Guerrero recorded a mind boggling 36 digs in this game.
