The much anticipated and long awaited official kickoff to the 2016 Texas High School football season kicks-off got underway on Friday, August 26, 2016 when the mighty C.C. Winn Mavericks under the direction of head football coach Eric Villasenor hit the road to the Spinach Capital of the World Crystal City, Texas to inaugurate their 11th all-time gridiron opener by tangling with the Crystal City Javelinas in a 7:30 PM non-district football matchup.
Just as we predicted in our pre-game preview, true to form the home standing Crystal City Javelinas utilized the services of their talented backfield trio early on in this contest via the ground and through the air with their short passing game to mount a par of 80 yard scoring drives to take a 12 to 0 lead over the Mavericks.
Early in the second quarter the Mavericks offense got into gear utilizing their talented backfield trio of running backs Danny Rios and Omar Hinojosa along with starting signal caller Julio Ruiz to mount an impressive 80 yard scoring drive of their own that was capped off with a one yard keeper by quarterback Julio Ruiz. Norberto Barragan tacked on the point after to narrow their deficit to 12 to 7.
After the ensuing kickoff the Javelinas began to tote the pigskin down the field but their drive was halted by Mavericks standout defensive back Rene Auces who picked off his first of two interceptions on the night.
The Mavericks offense began to mix their potent running game with a much improved passing game with ulio Riz sharing the wealth between his two hardnosed running backs and pulling the rigger with pin point accuracy with his passes spreading the wealth amongst his three sure handed wide receivers with the likes of standout Ruben Esquivel, Alfonso Cardona and Gilbert Rodriguez. The mighty Mavericks orchestrated a 54 yard scoring drive to take the lead in this game culminating with a 31 yard touchdown pass from Julio Ruiz to wide receiver Ruben Esquivel late in the irst half. Ruiz then connected with tight end Jose Rodriguez with the two-point conversion to give the Mavericks a 15 to 12 lead over the Javelinas at the end of the first half of play.
In the second half the Mavericks defense who played aggressively all night long applying relentless pressure and employing a quick and swarming defensive scheme forced the Javelinas to punt the ball over in the first offensive series of the second half. The Mavericks offense continued where they left of at the end of the first half mounting a time consuming 75 yard scoring drive with Ruiz, Rios and Hinojosa taking turns carrying the pigskin behind the Mavericks massive but quite athletic offensive line that all game long dominated the line of scrimmage and going 10 to 12 yards down field laying down some punishing blocks tp spring the running backs into the Javelinas secondary. The proud Mavericks that were supported by the huge Mavericks Nation in attendance increased their lead by mounting a long 75 yard scoring drive that was punctuated with a well orchestrated 35 yard touchdown pass from Julio Ruiz to wide out Ruben Esquivel who hauled in the pass in stride and into the end zone. The PAT failed but the Mavericks now enjoyed a 21 to 12 lead over the Javelinas.
To their credit the Javelinas refused to go away and quickly countered with a one play 59 yard scoring drive on a sensational; 59 yard sprint to pay dirt by their tailback midway in the thrird period. The two point conversion run as good to narrow their deficit to 21 to 20.
Undeterred the Mavericks offense countered right back with a 59 yard scoring drive of their own capped off with a brilliant 40 yard scamper to the promise land Julio Ruiz who received excellent down field blocking by the Mavericks offensive line to spring him loose. Christian Rodriguez tacked on the point after to give the Mavericks a 28 to 20.
The Mavericks stingy defense decided to get into the scoring column or so it seemed. On the Javelinas next offensive series, Mavericks standout safety Rene Auces read the play perfectly and picked off his second interception of the night and rambled 38 yards ino the end zone but unfortunately he was flagged for taunting on his way to the end zone which negated the score but gave the Mavericks excellent field possession deep inside the red zone. Bur after back to back penalties moved the ball back to the Javelinas 30 yard line Julio Ruiz who had one whaleof a game both rushing and passing dropped back in the pocket and connected with wide receiver Gilbert Rodriguez in the right corner of the end zone for the score. Christian Rodriguez converted the point after to pad the Mavericks lead to 35 to 20 at the end of the third quarter.
Or good measure the Mavericks offense game their beloved Mavericks Nation one more thrill in the fourth period engineering a 56 yard scoring drive predominately via their panted running game, The drive and game ws exclamated with a one yard blast into the end zone by running back Omar Hinojosa. Christian Rodriguez closed out the scoring for the night splitting the uprights with the point after to make the score 42 to 20 in favor of the victorious C.C. Winn Mavericks.
**Editor’s Note: Yes folks the final score should have been 42 to 20 but for some unexplained reason the scoreboard operator forgot his calculator at home and showed the Mavericks with 45 points. The home team Javelinas who are in charge of reporting the final score did so with the final being 45 to 20 so it will go down in the books as 45 to 20 instead of 42 to 20.
There were so many bright spots in this game for the Mavericks starting with the entire offensive line (Mario Elizondo, Emmanuel Ortiz, Kuz Garcia, Joey Salazar and Haime Fuentes along with tight end Jose Rodriguez) who played brilliantly all game long. Quarterbak Julio Ruiz who wound up the game’s leading rusher with 125 yards on 12 carries with a pair of TD runs, Wide receiver Rueben Esquivel who hauled in 5 pass receptios for a team high86 yards with 2 TD receptions. The Mavericks relentless and aggressive defense featuring defensive tackles Enrique Garza and Carlos Tijerina along with defensive ends Jacob Guerra and Victor Olguin. Line backers Albert Duran, ,Ernesto Villasenor and Rolando Sanchez. The Mavericks ball hogging secondary of Rene Auces who had two interceptions and Alex De Jesus who recorded one interception and had a vital rol in the victory.
