Coming off their heart breaking slim loss at the hands of the Medina Valley Panthers in their season opening game, the Eagle Pass Eagles varsity football team mentored by head coach Tom Gonzalez will hit the road this coming Friday, September 2, 2016 with a trip to the Gateway City of Laredo, Texas to tangle with former district foe the Laredo Cigarroa Toros in a 7:30 PM non-district gridiron match at Shirley Field.  The home standing Toros will venture into this encounter with a 1-0 record by virtue of their 20 to 16 victory over Zapata last week.  The visiting Eagle Pass Eagles will enter with a 0-1 record having fallen to Medina Valley by the narrow margin of 22 to 20 in their season opener.

Having matched their overall win total from last year, new head football coach Carlo Hein will have the services of 7 offensive and 5 defensive starters back from a squad that culminated last year with an overall season record of 1-9.  The Toros offensively will have a trio of main threats in the likes of left handed Jose Mosqueda #32, running back Isaac Soliz #23 a big strong runner, and their main weapon wide receiver Jesus Alonso #19 a very fast wide receiver that runs his pass patterns to near perfection.  The other capable receiver will be David Castanon #4. Veteran Adrian Fuentes along with Roel Villarreal, Eddie Villanueva, #68 name not on roster and Marco Pardo will man the front line for the Toros.

Defensively the always and sometimes over aggressive Toros will be quite young this year but do have a few experienced players coming back in defensive linemen Jorge Gutierrez, Victor Gonzalez, Danny Ruiz and Mariano Valdez. The Toros’ linebackers will be Victor Zamora, Victor Gonzalez and Joseph Lara. Carlos Zapata, Max Villanueva, Emilio Garcia and Rolando Gonzalez will patrol the defensive secondary.

The visiting Eagle Pass Eagles will come into this contest with one mission to eliminate the metal mistakes that proved costly last week in their heart breaking two-point loss at the hands of the Medina Valley Panthers.  The Eagles patented running game with the elusive and speedy tailback Mark Venegas and bruising quarterback Ricky Medina will seek to have a great and productive night against the Toros.  Look for the Eagles to utilize slot back Jose Riojas, wingback Brian Palacios and wide receivers Isaac Perales, Brian Esquivel and Ricky Reyes more into their game plan this week.  But as usual in order to be successful on offense the men in the trenches Cody Esquivel Jovan Garza, Isaac Castillo, Jorge Guardado and Adrian Rodriguez will need to dominate the line of scrimmage by sustaining their run and pass blocking.

On defense the Eagles will be tested through land and air by the Toros.  The fearless foursome defensive front line of Angel Miranda, Jesus Fernandez, Haran Rodriguez and Caleb Garcia who had a very solid game last week will speed up their tempo to stymie the Toros running game by dominating the front line and apply relentless pressure on the Toros signal caller on passing downs as well as force a few turnovers.  The Eagles line backing corps of David Ramos and David Kypuros will need to react quickly to the ball in support of the front line as well as to drop back into pass coverage.  Look for the Eagles’ secondary unit of Darwin Lechler, Alan Morales, Kevin Garcia and company to come away with a few interceptions. Ball control, clock management, field possession and turnovers will certainly play a vital role in determining the winner in this game.

Eagle Pass Sports Central would like to wish the mighty Eagle Pass Eagles they very best of luck against the Laredo Cigarroa Toros and would like to invite the entire community to make the trip to Laredo on Friday night and support the Eagles. Go Eagles! Beat the Toros!
