The Pride of Southern Maverick County the mighty C.C. Winn Mavericks’ varsity football squad mentored by head football coach Eric Villaseñor coming off their impressive 45 to 20 season opening victory over the Crystal City Javelinas will kick-off their home opener on Friday, September 2, 2016 when they entertain the Laredo LBJ Wolves in a 7:30 PM non-district gridiron matchup at the Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium. This gridiron encounter has been designated as the Mavericks Parent’s Night with the Mavericks paying tribute to their respective parents during pre-game festivities. This marquee matchup also has a little extra meaning as the visiting LBJ Wolves who are under the direction of former Eagle Pass Eagles head football coach Oki Villasenor who just happens to be the father of young Mavericks head football coach Eric Villasenor making this game the 4th edition of the Father vs. Son rivalry game. The son won the inaugural series match up but the father has won the last two games in this series. So you can expect that this Friday night’s game should be quite a real barn burner.
The visiting Laredo LBJ Wolves will venture into this matchup with 0-1 season record have dropped a heartbreaker at the hands of the John Marshall Rams 22 to19 in the waning seconds of the fourth quarter. The Wolves return the services of 5 offensive and 3 defensive starters back from a squad that culminated the season last year with an overall record of 7-3. Despite winning 7 games the Wolves missed out from advancing to the post season so rest assure they will come in quite hungry. The Wolves offense is not fancy but they are certainly well coached and execute their patented running attack quite well. Wolves will feature a talented, elusive and multi-threat running back in Antonio De La Torre #11 who will be the main threat to tote the pigskin in the Wolves potent running game. Alberto Garcia #10 will be the Wolves starting signal caller. Danny Uribe #40 who lines up at fullback and sometimes at tight end is an excellent lead blocker. Although the Wolves are predominately known for their running game they are also known to set you up and strike quickly with their aerial game with Antonio De La Torre #11 being their primary target long with wing back John Molina #20 and wide receiver Juan Gonzalez #13. The Wolves offensive line will be comprised by veteran Juan Vieyra #76 at right tackle, Reynaldo Martinez #74 at right guard, Alberto Herrera #51 at center, Izmael Gonzalez #50 at left guard and Myriel Jaramillo $75 at left tackle.
On the defensive side of the ball the Wolves year in and year out have fielded some tough and very aggressive defensive units but this year they will be relatively quite young in the experience department but they will be well prepared by their defensive coordinator and former Eagle Pass Eagles assistant coach Randy Bermea. The Wolves defense will showcase a pair of solid defensive ends in the big and massive Julian Gonzalez #90 and Enrique Ramirez and supported by a pair of hard hitting linebackers in Raul Lira and Leo Benavides. Sergio Guel will patrol the Wolves secondary.
The home standing Mavericks who put up over 40 points in their season opener will seek to duplicate or even better that number in their home opener. The Mavericks will certainly be seeking to utilize their backfield trio of swift running backs Omar Hinojosa, Danny Rios and multi talented quarterback Julio Ruiz to have a big game running behind the Mavericks massive but quick footed offensive who can pave a wide path for their patented and potent running game. The Mavericks offense has also shown to take to the airway of need be having three very solid and sure handed receivers in Ruben Esquivel Alfonso Cardona and Gilbert Rodriguez and you can also not forget the Mavs big tight end Jose Rodriguez. But as usually is the case in any offense it will depend on the success at the line of scrimmage by the Mavericks offensive line comprised by Mario Elizondo, Emmanuel Orta, Kuz Garcia, Joey Salazar and Jaime Fuentes that do not sit and wait for punishment instead they do the inflicting of the punishment by getting off the ball and maintain their blocks usually 10 to 12 yards downfield.
The perennially hard hitting and quick pursuing defense will certainly be tested by the veteran Wolves head football coach but as usual the Mavericks defense never backs down from any challenges. The big strong defensive front four of Carlos Tijerina, Enrique Garza, Jacob Guerra, and Victor Olguin will need to establish dominance at the line of scrimmage as well as apply defensive pressure and possibly force a few turnovers. The linebackers corps of Albert Duran, Rolando Sanchez and Ernesto Villasenor who had a very solid effort last week will need to provide run support as well cover the backs out of the backfield. The Mavericks stellar secondary quartet of Raul Gomez, Alonso Vallejo, Alex De Jesus and Rene Auces who last week registered three interceptions must be ready for any trick plays thrown at them. Ball control, clock management, field possession and turnovers will certainly play a vital role in determining the winner in this game.
Eagle Pass Sports Central would like to wish the mighty C.C. Winn Mavericks they very best of luck against the Laredo LBJ Wolves and would like to invite the entire community to come out to the stadium on Friday night and support the C.C. Winn Mavericks. Go Mavericks! Beat the Wolves!
