The Eagle Pass Eagles varsity football team mentored by Tom Gonzalez hit the road to Laredo, Texas on Friday, September 2, 2016 to tangle with the Laredo Cigarroa Toros in a 7:30 PM non-district gridiron encounter at Shirley Field. The visiting Eagle Pass Eagles pitched a near perfect shutout romping past the home standing Laredo Cigarroa Toros by the final score of 49 to 0 unleashing a relentless and powerful running attack to even their season record to 1-1.
After a couple of exchanges of punts by both teams to start the game, the visiting Eagle Pass Eagles turned their patented running attack loose o the stunned home standing Toros with Mark Vengas and Ricky Medina running wild into the secondary. The Eagles orchestrated their first scoring drive of the game from 47 yards ot that was capped off with a 10 yard keeper from quarterback Ricky Medina with 8:15 left in the first quarter clock. Jose Riojas added the point after to give the Eagles a 7 to 0 lead over the Toros.
On the very next offensive series the Eagles offense manufactured a 59 yard scoring drive predominately with their patented ground attack behind the solid blocking o the Eagles Big Boys on the front line. The drive culminated with a 12 yard scamper to pay dirt by tailback Mark Venegas with 7:49 remaining I the second quarter, Jose Riojas converted the points after to extend the Eagles lead to 14 to 0.
Late in the first half the Eagles defense who simply played phenomenal throughout the entire first half of play limiting the Toros to a whopping 17 total yards with no first downs set up the offense when linebacker David Ramos intercepted a Laredo Cigarroa pass attempt at the Toros 37 yards line.
The Eagles offense took over and immediately went to their bread and butter scheme ground out yardage via their round attack. The Eagles capped off the short scoring drive with a 15 tard sprint into the end zone by Mark Venegas with just 30 seconds left before halftime. After a bobble on the point after snap, Eagles place holder Dee Andre Torres tossed a two point conversion pass to David Ramos to give the Eagles a 29 to 0 lead at halftime.
The Toros received the second half kickand simply went nowhere and were forced to punt. On the ensuing punt Eagles linebacker David Kypuros broke through a couple of would be blockers and blocked the punt which was covered up by the Eagles defense at the Cigarroa 13 yard line. Surprisingly the Eagles offense could not punch it in so they settled for a successful 34 yard field off the right leg of Jose Riojas.
On the Eagles second offensive series of the second half, the ales offensive machine produced a lengthy 84 yard scoring drive culminating with a sensational 50 yard scamper by quarterback Ricky Medina right down the heart of the Cigarroa defense with 5:08 showing o the third quarter clock. Jose Riojas split the uprights with the point after to give the Eagles an insurmountable 39 to 0 lead over the Toros.
Late in the third quarter the scoring parade continued with a short 34 yard scoring drive culminating with Mark Venegas’ fourth rushing touchdown of the night from 7 yards out with 2:33 left in the third quarter. Jose Riojas remained perfect in the point aster department giving the Eagles a 46 to 0 lead.
The final sore of this game came on the Eagles last offensive series of the game when placekicker Jose Riojas booted a 25 yard field through the uprights to give the Eagles to a lopsided 49 to 0 victory over the Laredo Cigarroa Toros.
There were so many bright spots for the Eagles on this night suc=h as the Eagles offense who amassed whopping 422 yards rushing on the night with Ricky Medina leading all rushers with 210 yards and Mark Venegas with 129 yards due to the excellent blocking of the Eagles offensive front line. The entire Eagles defensive squad of Jesus Fernandez, Angel Miranda, David Ramos, David Kypuros and company who shutout the Toros and did not allow a single first down until late in the fourth quarter and that came against the second and third teamers.
The victorious Eagle Pass Eagles return home next Friday, September 9, 2016 where they will tangle with their cross town counterparts the .C.C. Winn Mavericks in the 11th Annual Friendly Rivalry Game at the Cozel Foster Veterans Memorial Stadium. Kickoff time is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
