The Pride of Southern Maverick County the mighty C.C. Winn Mavericks’ varsity football squad mentored by head football coach Eric Villasenor hosted the Laredo LBJ Wolves in their 2016 home opener on Friday, September 2, 2016 at the Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium.  This game was designated as Parent’s Night with the Mavericks players paying tribute to their respective parents during pre-game festivities.  Added to that it was also Father vs. Son Round IV as the LBJ head football coach is none other than Oki Villasenor the father of Mavericks head football coach Eric Villasenor which added a little extra incentive to this game.  The C.C. Winn Mavericks shutout the visiting Laredo LBJ Wolves by the score of 21 to 0 with a stellar offensive and defensive game plan.  That evens the Father vs. Son series at 2 wins and 2 losses each.

The home standing C.C. Winn Mavericks received the game’s opening kickoff and immediately gave their parents as well as the famed Mavericks Nation in attendance a preview of coming attractions for the evening when they orchestrated a well designed 12 play 83 yard scoring drive unleashing their three-headed rushing machine combined with their short passing game to matriculate down the field.  The scoring drive was capped off with a five-yard blast into the end zone by tailback Danny Rios with 7:48 showing on the first quarter clock.  Mavericks place kicker Christian Rodriguez tacked on the point after to give the Mavericks the early lead.

The Mavericks stingy defense with Alberto Duran Rolando Sanchez, Rene Auces, Rey Vasquez, Carlos Tijerina, Enrique Garza and company took their turn to showcase their stuff as they held the usually productive LBJ running game in check forcing the Wolves to punt in each of their three first half possessions.

Midway in the second period the Mavericks mounted yet another impressive long scoring drive of 84 yards with Julio Ruiz, Danny Rios and Omar Hinojosa taking turns in toting the pigskin.  Mavericks starting signal caller Julio Ruiz who would wind up with a fabulous night both rushing and passing, utilized the services of his big right end Jose Rodriguez and wide receivers Alfonso Cardona, Gilbert Rodriguez and Ruben Esquivel with pin point passing during this drive.  The scoring drive concluded with a one-yard plunge into pay dirt by tailback Danny Rios with 5:09 left in the first half.  Christian Rodriguez converted the point after to give the Mavericks a 14 to 0 lead over the Laredo LBJ Wolves at the end of the first half.

The second half saw the Wolves receive the second half kickoff but once again the Mavericks defense rose to the occasion to limit the Wolves to minimal gain and forced them to punt on their first series, On the Wolves second offensive series standout safety Rene Auces recorded his third interception of the season to set up the Eagles offense.  The third quarter got a little sloppy probably due to the torrential rain the Mother Nature provided early in the afternoon.  The Mavericks has three more potential promising drives halted due to fumbles after a completed pass.

Early in the fourth and final period of this game the Mavericks paced by their massive offensive line who all game long was blowing people off the line of scrimmage and going downfield to lay some punishing blocks manufactured a 63 yard scoring drive that was capped off with a one-yard keeper from quarterback Juiio Ruiz with 11:36 showing on the stadium scoreboard clock.  Christian Rodriguez tacked on the point after to give the Mavericks a 21 to 0 lead over the Wolves.

Having been held in check throughout the entire game the Wolves finally threatened to put some points on the board when their backup tail back broke loose for a 63-yard gallop deep into the Mavericks red zone.  But with the famed Mavericks Nation cheering them on, the mavericks defense held their ground at the one-yard line facing a fourth down an one as defensive back Rey Vasquez preserved the shutout on a sensational shoestring interception in the end zone to give the Mavericks the programs second ever shutout by the final score of 21 to 0 over the Laredo LBJ Wolves.

There were so many bright spots in this game such as the Mavericks running game who had two one hundred yard rushers in Julio Ruiz and Danny Rios with 110 and 100 yards respectively. Also worth being recognized was outstanding blocking of the Mavericks’ offensive line as well as the performance of the Mavericks’ stingy, hard hitting and swarming defense.  The Mavericks secondary who picked off two LBJ pass attempts giving the unit a total of five interceptions on the season with Rene Auces accounting for three int’s thus far.  Mavericks signal caller Julio Ruiz who accomplished a feat not seen since the glory days of the legendary Eagle Pass Eagles record setting quarterback Beco Maldonado back in the magical year of 1972 as he was perfect in the passing department completing all 13 passes he attempted on the night.

The victorious Mavericks now turn their sights to next Friday, September 9, 2016 when they will host their cross town rivals the Eagle Pass Eagles in the 11th Annual Friendly Rivalry Game at the Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium.  Kickoff time is scheduled for 7:30 PM
