Well sports here we go, the long awaited and much anticipated matchup between the two local high school varsity football teams will take center stage on Friday, September 9, 2016 when the C.C. Winn Mavericks under the direction of head football coach Eric Villasenor will host their cross town rivals the Eagle Pass Eagles mentored by head football coach Tom Gonzalez at 7:30 PM in the 11th Annual Rivalry Football Game at the Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium where a standing room only crowd is expected to attend.  For the past 10 years this game has seen many memorable thrills both offensively and defensively including last year’s thriller that was not decided until a last second desperation pass into the corner of the end zone.  A new stadium record crowd of 7500 witnessed last year’s thriller.  Although the Eagles lead the all-time series 10 to 0 the Mavericks have given the Eagles more that a serious run for their money in this series and this year’s game should be no exception.  Everyone that is involved in this non-district football game (players, coaches, trainers and school officials) knows there is nothing at stake other a simple victory or a loss for it’s just another game on the schedule.

The Eagle Pass Eagles who are the designated visiting team will venture into this game sporting an overall season record of 1-1.  The C.C. Winn Mavericks who are the designated home team will enter currently sporting and overall season record of 2-0.  Some very interesting matchups will shape up on the gridiron all game long as both of these teams battle each other with every ounce of energy in their bodies but with dignity, pride and class.

The Eagles offense will have the formidable task of going toe to toe against the Mavericks big and aggressive defense especially at the line of scrimmage where the Eagles offensive line of Cody Esquivel, Issac Castillo, Jorge Guardado, Adrian Rodriguez and Jovan Garza will have their hands full in the trenches against the Mavericks quick and strong defensive front four of Carlos Tijerina, Enrique Garza, Jacob Guerra and Victor Olguin who have raised havoc in the backfield the previous two games..

The Mavericks hard hitting and quick pursuing line backing corps of Albert Duran, Ernesto Villasenor and Rolando Sanchez will look forward to try and stymie the Eagles running game with Mr. Inside and Mr. Outside Ricky Medina and Mark Venegas. But perhaps the key matchup of this contest will be the Eagles receiving corps of Jose Riojas, Brian Palacios, Isaac Perales, Brian Esquivel and Ricky Reyes going up against the Mavericks stingy and ball hawing secondary unit of standout Rene Auces, Alex De Jesus, Raul Gomez and Rey Vasquez who already have recorded 5 interceptions I just two games.

The Mavericks offense will also have the formidable task of going up against the equally aggressive Eagles defensive unit.  The Mavericks massive and quick footed offensive line of Mario Elizondo, Emmanuel Orta, Kuz Garcia, Joey Salazar and Jaime Fuentes will certainly be challenged by the Eagles fast and hard rushing defensive line of Haran Rodriguez, Jesus Fernandez, and Angel Miranda.  The Mavericks potent three-headed rushing attack of quarterback Julio Ruiz and running backs Danny Rios and Omar Hinojosa look forward the challenge of facing the Eagles hard hitting linebackers of David Ramos, Alek Alvarez and David Kypuros.  The Mavericks sure handed receiving corps of stellar Ruben Esquivel, Alfonso, Cardona and Gilbert Rodriguez as well as tight end Jose Rodriguez could be the key to victory as they go head to head against the Eagles young secondary unit featuring Darwin Lechler, Kevin Garcia, Alan Morales and company.  Ball control, clock management, play execution, turnovers and special teams will play a vital role in determining the winner of this contest.

Sports fans get your tickets and come out to the stadium early to secure a good seat and witness another epic thriller in this friendly rivalry series.  You will also be treated to a fantastic halftime show as both the Thundering Mavericks Marching Band as well as the mighty Eagles Marching Band will showcase their respective talent out on the field along with the Silverline Dance Team and the Diamond Dolls Dance Team. Fans in attendance will also be able to see and hear firsthand the famed Mavericks Nation and Eagles Loyal Legion of fans cheering their hearts out for their respective favorite team.

Eagle Pass Sports Central wishes both the C.C. Winn Mavericks and Eagle Pass Eagles absolutely the very best of luck in this friendly rivalry game and invite the entire community of Eagle Pass, Texas to come out to the stadium and support your respective favorite team but please do so with class, dignity and respect after all these are just young local high school youths playing just a game.  These are not the Dallas Cowboys vs. Washington Redskins and it’s really sad to see a few people try to make this into a Hatfields-McCoys like feud not realizing that these youngsters are lifelong friends off the field and a few are related to each other. Eagle Pass Sports Central will once again bring you the only complete game coverage of this contest as well as the only official game and individual stats.
