The Eagle Pass Eagles varsity football team under the direction of head coach Tom Gonzalez coming off their hard earned victory over the C.C. Winn Mavericks last Friday have a short week to prepare for their District 29-6A opening matchup against the Laredo Alexander Panthers on Thursday, September 15, 2016 in a 7:30 PM gridiron encounter at the Laredo United Student Activity Center.  The home standing Laredo Alexander Bulldogs will enter with a winless 0-3 mark while the visiting Eagle , 2016Pass Eagles will venture in sporting an overall season record of 2-1.

Coach Joel Lopez’s Bulldogs uncharacteristically are struggling this season having gone winless throughout the non-district part of their schedule.  Offensively the Bulldogs will be led by their starting quarterback Matt Connor #12 who runs and throws very well and has a very quick release.  Beto Galvan #1 is their featured running back a very good and tough runner.  The two wide receivers will be Leo Garza #10 and Peter Brewsyer #25.  Dante Swain #13 is the slot back and one of their favorite targets. Albert Laurel #3 will be the wingback. The offensive line is above average size but can be handled.

Defensively the Bulldogs will feature a 4-3 scheme with Carlos Cuellar $4 and Daniel Chapman #5 at the defensive end positions.  David Saldana #92 and Omar Galan #99 will be the defensive tackles.  Seth Pena #14, Mario Vasquez, and Jakoby Torres #43 will handle the line backing duties for the Bulldogs.  The Bulldogs secondary will feature Enrique Montalvo #21 and Guillermo Compton #24 at the corners with Robert Garcia #14 and Austin Allen #30 at safeties.

The visiting Eagle Pass Eagles will certainly come into this contest seeking to turn loose their powerful running game of Mark Venegas, Jose Riojas and Ricky Medina utilizing the blocking of the Eagles offensive line who will need to win the battle in the trenches enabling the Eagles to control the clock and sustain scoring drives.  The Eagles passing game will also need to contribute in this contest so look for Ricky Reyes, Brian Palacios, Jose Reyes and even Mark Venegas out of the backfield to get more action via the airway just to keep the Bulldogs defense honest.

The Eagles defense will certainly need to establish dominance at the line of scrimmage right off the bat.  Though shorthanded due to injuries the Eagles defensive line will need to shut down the Bulldogs running game as well as apply pressure on passing downs, Eagles line backers David Ramos and David Kypuros have been playing very well the last three games but will need to step it up another notch in this district opener.  The Eagles secondary of Alan Morales, Darwin Lechler and company can expect to be severely tested by the Bulldogs passing attack.  Look for the Eagles hard hitting and aggressive defense to come away with a few turnovers in this game.

Eagle Pass Sports Central wishes the mighty Eagles the very best of luck against the Laredo Alexander Bulldogs and invites the entire community of Eagle Pass, Texas to make the trip to Laredo, Texas  on Thursday night and support the Eagles. GO eagleS! BEAT THE bulldogs!
