The C.C. Winn Mavericks varsity football team returns to the friendly confines of the Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium on Friday, September 16, 2016 to host the Mission Eagles in a 7:30 PM non-district gridiron encounter.  The home standing Mavericks under the direction of head coach Eric Villasenor ventured into this matchup sporting an overall season record of 2-1 while the visiting Mission Eagles mentored by their head coach and former NFL quarterback Koy Detmer came in with an overall season marl of 1-2.

Coach Detmer inherited a club that culminated last season with a 4-6 overall record and has 5 offensive and 7 defensive starters back.  The visiting Mission Eagles have implemented the famed West Coast offense into their scheme this year with quarterback Rudy Trevino #3 as the trigger man but was hurt last week so look for #8 to take over/  He is very athletic but will under throw his receivers. Esteban De Leon $2 will be the featured running back.  He is their best athlete and very explosive.  Robert Martinez #34 is the fullback mostly used as a lead blocker but his number is called he is a very tough runner. Must key on him he will lead you to the play.  #1 and #12 Victor Rodriguez is their two main wide receivers.  Rodriguez is not a tall receiver like #1 but he is much faster than #1 and is very sure handed.  #94 is their tight end a very big blocker that will release out in their passing game.  The Mission Eagles offensive line is very big and quite mobile.  The left side of the offensive line is by far the stronger side.

On defense the Eagles will have an experienced group featuring standout linebacker Steven De Leon and stellar free safety Azahel Arizpe.

The home standing Mavericks after their heart breaking loss at the hands of the Eagle Pass Eagles last week look to return to the will column as they seek to unleash their patented running game with Danny Rios, Omar Hinojosa and Julio Ruiz loose into the Mission secondary behind the blocking of their massive offensive line.  The Mavericks will also seek to employ their passing game with wide receivers Ruben Esquivel, Alonso Cardona, and Gilbert Rodriguez along with big tight end Jose Rodriguez better that they did last week where they struggled to connect.

Defensively the aggressive Mavericks defensive unit who did have a very effort against the Eagle Pass Eagles will once again be tested by the Mission Eagles but the Fab- four defensive front line of Jacob Guerra, Carlos Tijerina, Enrique Garza and Victor Olguin will not back down from the challenge and look forward to dominating the front line.  The Mavericks linebackers will be short handed with the loss of Rolando Sanchez to a knee injury but Albert Duran and Ernesto Villasenor will be ready for the challenge.  The talented Mavericks secondary will be severely tested but rest assure that they will be ready to orce a few turnovers.

Eagle Pass Sports Central wishes the mighty Mavericks the very best of luck against the Mission Eagles and invites the entire community of Eagle Pass, Texas to come out to the stadium this Friday night and support the Mavericks. GO MAVERICKS! BEAT THE EAGLES!
