The C.C. Winn Mavericks’ varsity football team returned to the friendly confines of the Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium on Friday, September 16, 2016 to host the Mission Eagles in a 7:30 PM non-district gridiron encounter. The home standing Mavericks under the direction of head coach Eric Villasenor ventured into this matchup sporting an overall season record of 2-1 while the visiting Mission Eagles mentored by their head coach and former NFL quarterback Koy Detmer came in with an overall season mark of 1-2. The mighty Mavericks return to the win column with a sound 27 to 7 defeat of the Mission Eagles.

The visiting Mission Eagles received the game’s opening kickoff and on their very first play from scrimmage the Mavericks hard hitting and stingy defense set the tone as the Eagles completed a short pass out in the left flat but Mavericks defensive corner back Rey Vasquez stripped the ball out the Eagles receiver’s hands and teammate Raul Gomez recovered the errant pigskin giving the Mavericks offense excellent field possession at the Mission 34-yard line.
The Mavericks offense quickly went to their patented power running game moving the ball to the Mission 15-yard line but surprisingly the drive stalled and the Mavericks were forced to turn the ball over on downs.
Not to worry the Mavericks defense who employed a cat like and very aggressive defensive game plan on this night forced the Eagles to punt the ball over after three plays that netted only four yards. The Mavericks offense went back to their bread and butter to matriculate down the field for 51 yard scoring drive capped with a 1-yard keeper by quarterback Julio Ruiz with 5:10 showing on the first quarter clock. The point after attempt sailed wide left however but the Mavericks had a 6 to 0 lead.
The Mavericks defense went back to work after the ensuing kickoff and once again forced a turnover with a bone shattering tackle to case a fumble that was recovered by the Mavericks big nose take Enrique Garza to set up the Mavericks next score of the game with the Mavericks offense orchestrated a 41 yard scoring drive culminating with a 14-yard scamper to pay dirt by tail back workhorse Danny Rios with 8:19 remaining in the second quarter. Christian Rodriguez tacked on the point after to give the Mavericks a 13 to 0 lead over the Eagles
On their next offensive series that Mavericks mounted what sure seemed like another scoring drive only to see the short drive come to a halt at the Mission 4-yard line as the Mavericks fumbled the ball away for their only turnover of the game.
Once again the Mavericks stingy defense of Jacob Guerra, Carlos Tijerina, Enrique Garza, Albert Duran Ernesto Villasenor Rene Auces , Rey Vasquez and company quickly forced the Eagles to punt for the third time. The Eagles offense struck quickly capping off a short 29 yard scoring drive with a one-yard blast into the end zone by tailback Danny Rios with 2:34 left before halftime. Christian Rodriguez converted the point after to extend the Mavericks lead to 20 to 0.
The Mavericks had several other chances to potentially put some more points on the board in the first half but their passing game was just not clicking this evening as several wide open receivers were either underthrown or the ball thrown behind them falling harmlessly to the turf for an incomplete pass.
During the halftime break the partisan Mavericks Nation in attendance were treated to a sensational halftime performance by the Silverline dance team that drew a standing ovation from the Mavericks Nation with their rendition of several of the legendary Selena classic songs. The Thundering Mavericks Band also put on a magnificent halftime show. The official halftime stats from Eagle Pass Sports Central showed the Mission Eagles with only 2 first downs, 26 yards rushing and 25 yards passing as the Mavericks defense was simply dominant. On the contrary the Mavericks had 6 first downs, 146 yards rushing and 54 yards passing.
The Mavericks received the second half kickoff and started out a little sluggish turning the ball over on downs at the Mission 45-yard line. The Mission Eagles only successful series came on their first possession of the second half as they mounted a three play 55 yard scoring drive capped with a 24-yard gallop to pay dirt by tailback Steven De Leon with 6:49 showing on the third quarter clock. Eagles place kicker Jose Salinas added the point after to narrow their deficit to 20 to 7 as the game headed to the fourth quarter.
Early in the fourth quarter the Mavericks relentless pressure forced the Eagles punter to lose his concentration and to get off a very short 14-yard punt to give the Mavericks offense excellent field possession at the Mission 28-yard line. The Mavericks powerful ground attack utilizing the services of their quick footed massive offensive line with Danny Rios, Julio Ruiz, Ruben Esquivel and Alfonso Cardona taking turns in toting the pigskin capping off the short scoring drive on a fourth and goal from the one-yard line with Danny Rios bullying his way into the end zone with 8:58 left in the game. Christian Rodriguez split the uprights with the point after to give the Mavericks a 27 to 7 lead over the Eagles. The Mavericks final score was set up with a sensational 22-yard keeper from quarterback Julio Ruiz from the Mission 23-yard line on third down.
The Eagles final offensive series came to an abrupt halt as standout free safety Rene Auces recorded his fourth interception of the season to seal the third victory of the season for the mighty C.C. Winn Mavericks. Although the Mavericks defense played magnificently all game long forcing a total of four turnovers you have to give the Mavericks offense their due as they converted a crucial fourth down on three separate occasions during this game due to the blocking of the big boys on the front line Luz Garcia, Emmanuel Orta, Jaime Fuentes, Mario Elizondo, Sebastian Lopez and tight end Jose Rodriguez.
The victorious C.C. Winn Mavericks return to the gridiron next Friday where they will host the Central Catholic Buttons at 7:30 PM in their final; non district matchup at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium. Eagle Pass Sports Central invites the entire community of Eagle Pass, Texas to come out and support the mighty Mavericks.
