Fresh off their dominating victory over the Mission Eagles last Friday night, the C.C. Winn Mavericks varsity football team under the direction of head football coach Eric Villasenor will culminate their non-district portion of their schedule this coming Friday, September 23, 2016 when they entertain the perennially tough San Antonio Central Catholic Buttons in a 7:30 PM non-district gridiron encounter at the Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium.  The Central Catholic Buttons will come into this game sporting an overall season record of 2-2 but those two losses were by a combined total of 10 points while 6the home standing Mavericks will venture in with a 3-1 mark.

Central Catholic head football coach L.D. Green will feature his one-two punch of quarterback Jacob Nava #8 a very accurate passer and their standout running back Caleb Salinas #18 by far the Button’s best athlete and very explosive and punishing running back that is big, strong and very physical.  The Buttons will also feature a quartet of very talented and sure handed wide receivers in the likes of Ty Williamson #12 who is a bonafide deep threat along with Thomas Palomera #6, Jack Perkins #22 and Clark Medina #24.  The Buttons offensive front line which could be the key to this game will be comprised by right tackle Eric Oyervidez #77, right guard Grant Holmes #50, massive center Troy Gonzalez #79, left guard Jorge Cantu #66 and left tackle Shane Buecher #70.  The Buttons are predominately a running team rushing the pigskin at a rate of about 60% per game but do like to utilize their aerial game plan as well.

The Buttons defense will be led by standout defensive linemen Ramon Aguilar #61, and Seth McCrum #54, inside linebacker Matthew Gonzaba #50 and strong safety Andres Flores #13.  Handling the placekicking duties will be sophomore Franco Querido #31.

The home standing C.C. Winn Mavericks will seek to continue to unleash their powerful running game that is averaging 226 yards rushing per game with running backs Danny Rios and Omar Hinojosa along with quarterback Julio Ruiz and slot back Alfonso Cardona running loose into the Central Catholic secondary and into pay dirt.  The key to the Mavericks offense of course has been their massive offensive line who for the most part has dominated the line of scrimmage and beyond as they do an excellent job of blocking down field.  Look for the Mavericks to do a much better job in their passing game this week seeking to utilize the services of their speedy wide receiver Ruben Esquivel, Gilbert Rodriguez and Alfonso Cardona as well as Big tight end Jose Rodriguez.

The Mavericks stingy and aggressive defensive unit that is allowing only 149 yards rushing per game will be tested heavily by the Buttons big running back but as usual the Mavericks defense does not back down from any challenge and will look to continue to inflict bone rattling punishment on the Buttons ball carriers.  The Mavericks fearsome-foursmen defensive line Enrique Garza, Carlos Tierina, Jacob Guerra and Victor Olguin and the vastly improved Mavericks line backing corps of Albert Duran and Ernesto Villasenor must be ready to stop the running game.  The Mavericks talented secondary unit of Rey Vasquez, Alex De Jesus, Raul Gomez and standout Rene Auces will be on high alert as the Buttons will go to the airway against the Mavericks.

Eagle Pass Sports Central wishes the mighty Mavericks the very best of luck against the Central Catholic Buttons and invite the entire community to come out and join the famed Mavericks Nation in supporting the .C.C. Winn Mavericks. GO MAVERICKS! BEAT THE BUTTONS!
