The Eagle Pass Eagles varsity football team under the direction of head football coach Tom Gonzalez journeyed to San Antonio, Texas to tangle with the South San Bobcats in a 7:30 PM District 29-6A football contest. The visiting Eagle Pass Eagles ventured into this game sporting an overall season record of 3-2 and a district mark of 1-1. The home standing Bobcats entered with a 0-5 season record and a 0-2 district mark. These two former district foes from the past were renewing a fierce and competitive rivalry from the 1950’s and 1960’s. In a game that could easily be described in a song “Anything you can do I can do better”; the mighty Eagles outgunned the home standing Bobcats to come away with the well earned 55 to 33 victory to improve their season record to 4-2 and their district mark to 2-1.
The home standing South San Bobcats received the game’s opening kickoff and quickly proceeded to mount a 7 play 77-yard scoring drive capped off with a 59-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Raul Augusto to wide receiver James Valencia with 10:26 showing on the first quarter clock. The point after attempt was no good.
It took the visiting Eagle Pass Eagles just two plays from scrimmage to counter with a game tying touchdown when stellar running back Mark Venegas showcased his superior speed racing 81 yards untouched around left end into the end zone with 10:02 left in the opening period. The point after attempt failed but the score was now tied at six all.
Back came the Bobcats as they orchestrated a five play 48yeard scoring drive culminating with a four-yard plunge to pay dirt by James Valencia with 6:45 left in the first period. Jose Crispin tacked on the point after to give the Bobcats a 13 to 6 lead over the Eagles.
The lead did not last long as the Eagles countered in their next offensive series with a four play 85-yard scoring drive that was capped off with a 16-yard sprint to pay dirt by Mark Venegas with 4:18 left in the opening period. Jose Riojas converted the game tying point after to knot up the score at 13 all.
Well here we go again the Bobcats answered right back after a great kickoff return with a short 37-yard scoring drive with quarterback Raul Augusto tallying on a seven-yard keeper with10:45 showing in the second quarter clock. Jose Crispin tacked on the point after to give the Bobcats a 20 to 13 lead.
The Eagles offense was forced to punt on their next possession but Eagles punter Jose Riojas got off a booming 64 yard punt which took a high bounce over the outstretched hands of the Bobcats punt return man with ball rolling all the way to the South San one yard where the Eagles had apparently downed the ball but the referee did not signal the ball dead until one of the Eagles picked up the ball and the referee signaled that the Eagles had recovered a fumble as the ball apparently was touched by the Bobcats punt return man thus becoming a live ball.
The Eagles offense quickly capitalized on the turnover with a one yard run into the end zone by tailback Mark Venegas with 9:46 left in the first half. Jose Riojas knotted up the score at 20 all with the point after.
The Bobcats coughed up the pigskin in their next possession as the Eagles hard hitting defense laid a punishing tackle on the ball carrier and the Eagles defense recovered the ball at the South San 19-yard line. Mark Venegas capped off the short scoring drive with a three-yard TD run with 7;30 left in the second period. Jose Riojas split the uprights with the point after to give the Eagles a 27 to 20 lead over the Bobcats.
The South San Bobcats immediately countered with a one play 75-yard sprint to pay dirt by quarterback Raul Agusto with 7:24 remaining before halftime. Jose Crispin converted the game tying point after knotting the score at 27 all.
The first half shootout concluded with the Eagle Pass Eagles mounting an impressive 76-yard scoring drive culminating with a six-yard touchdown run by slot back Jose Riojas with 2:24 left in the first half. Jose Riojas also added the point after to give the Eagles a 34 to 27 lead over the South San Bobcats at the end of the first half of play which was full of offensive action.
The Eagles received the second half kickoff and returned the kickoff all the way down to the Bobcats 22-yard line. The Eagles quickly extended their lead with an 18-yard touchdown pass from back up signal caller Brian Palacios to wide receiver Ricky Reyes with 10:59 showing on the third quarter clock with Reyes carrying the defender on his back into the end zone. Jose Riojas added the pint after to extend the Eagles lead to 41 to 27.
The South San Bobcats returned the ensuing kick all the way down to the Eagle Pass 14-yard line where it took the Bobcats just one play from scrimmage to tack on another score with a 14-yard touchdown run by running back Jaime Cabrera with 10:41 left in the third quarter. The point after attempt was no good but the Bobcats had narrowed their deficit to 41 to 33.
Late in the third quarter the Eagles orchestrated a 60-yard scoring drive capped off with a 38-yard touchdown pass from Bran Palacios to wide receiver Ricky Reyes with 2:39 left in the third period. Jose Riojas tacked on the point after to extend the Eagles lead to 48 to 33.
Early in the fourth and final quarter o play the proud Eagle Pass Eagles closed out the scoring for the night mounting a four play 51-yard scoring drive punctuated by none other than tailback Mark Venegas with a 22-yard scamper with 9:44 left in the game. Jose Riojas tacked on the point after to give the Eagles a 55 to 3 lead over the Bobcats, Eagles’ tailback Mark Venegas truly had a banner night rushing for a game high 245 yards on 20 carries for a whopping 12.25 yards per carry and tallied a personal best five rushing touchdowns on the night running behind the Eagles offensive line of Cody Esquivel, Adrian Rodriguez, Jorge Guardado, Isaac Castillo and Jovan Garza that dominated the battle in the trenches as the Eagles came away with the well earned 55 to 33 victory over the South San Bobcats.

The Eagles return to action next Friday, October 14, 2016 when they host no other than the District 29-6A co-leading Laredo United South Panthers who are coming off a sensational 44 to 35 victory over the preseason district favorites the Laredo United Longhorns in a 7:30 PM District 29-6A gridiron encounter at the Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium.
