Coming off their Open Week the mighty C.C. The Mavericks who are predominately known for their patented ground oriented offensive game scheme, unleashed a near perfect aerial assault to take a 34 to 26 victory over the McCollum Cowboys in front of a sizeable Mavericks Nation crowd in attendance.
After an exchange of punts by both teams to start out this game the home standing Cowboys threatened to tally the first points of the game in their second offensive series driving down to the Mavericks 14-yard line where the proud hard hitting Mavericks defense held their ground and forced the Cowboys to turn the ball over on downs.
The Mavericks offense took over and orchestrated a four play 86-yard scoring drive capped off with a perfect quick slant pass from quarterback Julio Ruiz to his favorite target Ruben Esquivel in between two defenders with Esquivel sprinting past the entire Cowboys defense for a 60-yard touchdown much to the delight of the famed Mavericks Nation in attendance. The point after attempt failed but the Mavericks had the early 6 to 0 lead over the Cowboys.
Early in the second quarter the McCollum Cowboys countered with a game tying touchdown with a 57-yard scoring drive culminating with a two yard run to pay dirt by tailback Jonathan Handy. Point after attempt was blocked by the Mavericks.
The Mavericks immediately answered back with a 57-yard scoring drive of their that was capped off with a near perfect 32-yard touchdown pass from Julio Ruiz to wide receiver Ruben Esquivel who had gotten behind the Cowboys secondary. With time winding down in the first half the Mavericks had one more opportunity to put points on the board when they recovered a Cowboys fumble at the Cowboys 29-yard line. On the first play from scrimmage Mavericks quarter back connected with wide receiver Ruben Esquivel who sure seemed to have gotten the ball across the pylon but the referee signaled that he had gone out of bounds at the one-yard line. With less than four seconds in the half Mavericks tried a quarterback sneak but Julio Ruiz was stopped at the one-foot line as time expired in the first half with the Mavericks leading 19 to 6.
The Mavericks received the second half kickoff but fumbled the ball away on their first play from scrimmage but never fear the defense is here as the Mavericks defense held their ground again and forced the Cowboys to turn the ball over on downs at the Mavericks 30-yard line. Disaster nearly struck again when quarterback Julio Ruiz was stripped of the ball which rolled all the way down to the Mavericks six-yard line but the athletic Julio Ruiz recovered the errant pigskin. The Mavericks were forced to punt and after the short punt the Cowboys took over at the Mavericks 25-yard line.
It did not take the Cowboys long to put the ball in the end zone on a three-yard keeper by quarterback Jordan Ortega. The point after attempt was good by Juan Inocencio narrowing the Cowboys deficit to 19 to 13.
The Mavericks countered with a 50-yard scoring drive that was punctuated when the Mavericks surprised everyone in the stadium by unleashing their secret weapon the man mountain defensive tackle Carlos Tijerina lined up in the backfield and literally blasted his way into the end zone from three yards out. Tijerina also tacked on the two-point conversion run giving the Mavericks a 27 to 13 lead over the Cowboys.
In their next offensive series, the Mavericks manufactured another 50 plus yard scoring drive that was capped off with Carlos Tijerina the defending District discus throwing champion taking the pitch from Julio Ruiz started to run to his left and surprised everyone in the stadium again when he pulled up and uncorked a perfect left handed spiral to wide receiver Ruben Esquivel in stride for a sensational 51-yard touchdown pass. Norberto Barragan tacked on the point after to give the Mavericks a 34 to 13 lead.
To their credit the home standing Cowboys did not fold in fact they answered immediately with a one play 75-yard sprint to pay dirt by tailback Jonathan Handy. Juan Inocencio added the point after to make the score 34 to 20 in favor of the Mavericks. The Cowboys then closed out the scoring for the night with a 34-yard touchdown pass from Jordan Ortega to Josh Garcia.
