Winn Mavericks varsity football team mentored by head football coach Eric Villasenor will venture back to the Alamo City on Friday, October 14, 2016 to resume their district gridiron battles with a 7:30 PM matchup against the tough San Antonio Southside Cardinals.  The home standing Cardinals will enter sporting an overall season record of 3-3 and a district mark of 0-1 having lost their district opener to the district pre-season favorite Uvalde Coyotes by the narrow margin of 18 to 14.  The visiting C.C. The home standing Cardinals have a very experienced and talented backfield with the likes of quarterback Johnny Herrera #4 who is very athletic, has the ability to run and throw with a good arm but not very accurate.  The main workhorse in their back field will be their talented senior running back Matthew Collier #2 the leading rusher in the greater San Antonio are and is a two-time All-State running back. The wide receiving corps for the Cardinals will feature slot back Angel De La Cruz #15 which is their second favorite receiver, slot back Humberto Medina #23. wide receiver Erik Luna #6 their favorite receiver and very fast with switch sides of the field and has run the reverse for big gains, wide receiver Gabriel Morris #20 very tall but does not have very good hands.  The Cardinals offensive line will be comprised by Steven Botello #51at left tackle, Mario Aranda #66 at left guard, Nate Garcia #64 at center, Adrian Altimirano #65 at right guard and #52 Jose Serna at right tackle.

The Cardinals defense will be led by standout defensive tackle Mario Aranda along with, defensive tackle Brandon Sandoval and defensive end Adan Garcia.  The Cardinal’s linebackers will be Robert Garza and Derrion Sendejo along with the stellar Andre Martin. The secondary will feature standout Eddie Perez, Chris Garcia and Angel Garza at safety.

The Mavericks will counter with their well balanced offense that is averaging 367.6 yards per game with 1289yards rushing and 917 yards passing.  The Mavericks powerful patented running game of quarterback Julio Ruiz, running back Danny Rios and slot back Ruben Esquivel look to have a big night against the Southside Cardinals.  The Mavericks passing game with slot back Ruben Esquivel, wide receivers Gilbert Rodriguez and Alfonso Cardona and the man mountain tight end Jose Rodrigez who showed his versatility as a running back and as a passer last week will also be needed to make great contributions to the Mavericks offensive scheme.  The Mavericks massive, strong and quick footed offensive line of Luz Garcia, Emmanuel Orta, Erik Del Bosque, Jaime Fuentes and Mario Elizondo will need to continue to dominate in the trenches.

The Mavericks had hitting and stingy defense led by Carlos Tijerina, Jacob Guerra, Enrique Garza, Albert Duran, Ernesto Villasenor, Rene Auces, Alex De Jesus, Raul Gomez, Alonso Vallejo. Rey Vasquez and Victor Olguin will need to dominate the lie of scrimmage and set their sights on the Cardinals running back throughout the game wrap their arms around him and gang tackle him inflicting some punishing tackles.  The Mavericks very talented secondary unit that can cover any receiver in the district will need to be on their toes ready to swarm to the ball as well as provide run support coverage.
