The District 29-5A co-leading C.C. Winn Mavericks varsity football team mentored by head football coach Eric Villasenor ventured to the Alamo City on Friday, October 14, 2016 to resume their district gridiron battles with a 7:30 PM matchup against the tough San Antonio Southside Cardinals.  The home standing Cardinals entered sporting an overall season record of 3-3 and a district mark of 0-1. The visiting C.C. Winn Mavericks came into this game with an all-time school best 5-1 season record and a district mark of 1-0.  The District 29-5A co-leading Mavericks made history on this night as they clichéd the school’s first ever winning season with a dramatic, hard hitting 14 to 13 victory over the Cardinals to improve their overall season record to a school best 6-1 and their district record to 2-0. Mavericks’ stingy, quick pursuing defense held the greater San Antonio’s leading rusher Matthew Collier to only 73 yards rushing on the night which is way below his usual 206.6 yard average per game.

With two usually explosive offenses surprisingly being held scoreless through the first quarter of play, the home standing Cardinals managed to dent the scoreboard first early in the second quarter with an 11 play 43 yard scoring drive capped off with a two yard run by their two-time All-State running back Matthew Collier.  Angel Garcia tacked on the point after to give the Cardinals the 7 to 0 lead over the Mavericks.

Later in the second period the Cardinals orchestrated a five play66 yard scoring drive culminating with a one yard quarterback sneak by Johnny Herrera,  The two-point conversion pass failed however but the Southside Cardinals now held a 13 to 0 lead in this vital game.

True to form the proud Mavericks never get flustered nor get panicky countered with a five play 68 yard scoring drive converting a fourth and two with a beautifully executed 60 yard touchdown pass from multi-talented quarterback Julio Ruiz to wide receiver Alfonso Cardona who hauled in the pass in the left lat made a spin move and utilized the key block from fellow wide receiver Ruben Esquivel and raced 60 yards untouched down the left sideline into the promise land.  Mavericks’ placekicker Christian Rodriguez added the point after to narrow the Mavericks deficit to 13 to 7.

The Cardinals had one more potential scoring drive in the waning seconds of the first half as they drove to the Mavericks 15 yard line where the Mavericks stingy defense held their ground and forced the Cardinals to attempt a 31 yard field on the last play of the first half which sailed wide left which unbeknownst to everyone in the stadium would be an omen of things yet to come.

During the halftime break the always well organized head football coach Eric Villasenor first met with his offensive coaching staff to go over strategies and tendencies and what new adjustments would be implemented in the second half.  Next he met with his defensive staff to go over strategies and adjustments that would be used in the second half to keep the Cardinals offense in check..  Finally he met with his coaching staff in the press box to look for any changes the Cardinals would make at the start o the second half so that the Mavericks could immediately counter with the appropriate adjustments then went into the locker room to give the Mavericks a pep talk and also implement the changes that wold be used in he second half o play.

It paid off immediately as the Mavericks received the second half kickoff and mounted a five play 70 yard go ahead scoring drive culminating with a sensational 21 yard sprint in to the end zone by quarterback Julio Ruiz.  Mavericks placekicker Christian Rodriguez split the uprights with the point after to give the Maverick a 14 to 13 lead over the Southside Cardinals.

After the ensuing kickoff the Mavericks hard hitting defense held the Cardinals in check and forced them to a three and out.  After the punt the Mavericks took over at their own 40 yard line and drove down to the Southside 39 yard line where the drive stalled as the Cardinals intercepted a Mavericks pass attempt at the Southside 15 yard line and returned the pick all the way down to the Mavericks 12 yard line late in the fourth quarter of play.  The proud aggressive Mavericks defense stood fast not budging and inch and forced the Cardinals to attempt a 37 yard field which once again ailed enabling the Mavericks to maintain their slim 14 to 13 lead.

With time winding down in this game and both sides of the stadium cheering their hearts out or their respective team the Cardinals drove down to the Mavericks five yard where the Mavericks defense supported by their famed Mavericks Nation in attendance buckled down and kept the Cardinals out of the end zone forcing them to attempt a potential game winning 21 yard field goal on the last play of the game.  The kick was up but low and behold it was wide right as jubilation reigned on the Mavericks side of the field as they came away with the hard fought and well deserved 14 to 13 victory.

Eagle Pass Sports Central congratulates the mighty Mavericks on their thrilling overall team victory over the San Antonio Southside Cardinals.  The district co-leading Mavericks return home next Friday, October 21, 2016 to tangle with the San Antonio Harlandale Indians in a 7:30 PM key matchup at the Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium.
