The Eagle Pass Eagles varsity football team under the guidance of head football coach Tom Gonzalez coming off a very narrow loss at the hands of the District co-leading Laredo United South Panthers this past Friday, return to their district gridiron battles this coming Saturday, October 22, 2016 when they journey to Laredo, Texas to tangle with the Laredo United Longhorns in a vital 7:00 PM matchup at the United ISD Student Activity Center.   Both the visiting Eagles and home standing Longhorns will enter with identical overall season records of 4-3 and district mark of 2-2.

The predominately pass oriented Longhorns who in recent history have seen them light up the scoreboard against anybody to the tune of about 59 points per game have been derailed these past two weeks averaging 30 points per game in their surprising back to back losses against the Laredo United South Panthers and San Antonio Southwest Dragons respectively.

The Longhorns offense will be spearheaded by their talented quarterback David Sanchez II #10 who last season was one to top receivers in the State of Texas.  Sanchez is very athletic, excellent passer and runs hard when his number is called.  The Eagles will need to confuse him with different looks.  Joining him in the backfield will be running back Isaac Velasquez #22 and very fast and hard nose runner and an excellent receiver out of the backfield.  The Longhorn receiving corps will feature Jorge Murillo #2 as the X Receiver an excellent playmaker very fast with great hands, Chris Salinas #88 as the slot back a good receiver who runs very good routes, Kevin Esparza # 3 as the wing back very athletic runs very good routes, gets open and has great hands.  He also serves as the backup quarterback and does great job in running the Longhorns offense when called upon, Danny Ruiz #13 as the Z Receiver is their best receiver a bonafide play maker must be held in check.  The Longhorns massive front line that pave the way for the Longhorns running game as well as provide the pass protection will be comprised by Jordi Lopez #77 at left tackles, Gerardo Hermosillo #70 at left guard, Denilson Hinojosa #51 at center, Max Villarreal #72 at right guard and Mauricio Rodriguez #65 at right tackle.  David Sanchez II #10 will handle the punting chores while Hector Slazar #42 will handle the placekicking duties for the Longhorns.

The United Longhorns starting defense that will certainly have their hands full with the Eagles powerful running game will have Eddie Herejon #43 at nose guard, Jesse Brondo #67 at defensive tackle, Timbo Villa #36 at defensive end and Mark Rodriguez #50 as the anchor end.  The Longhorns line backing crew will feature Christian #53 as the Willie backer, Carlos Sepulveda as the Bandit, and Joe Casso #45 as the Pete Linebacker.  The Longhorns secondary will be patrolled by J.J. Morales #20 at one corner, J.J. Salas #8 at the other corner, Chris Fine  #1 and Michael Castillo #5 as the safeties.

The visiting Eagle Pass Eagles will certainly need to dominate the line of scrimmage ith their big boys on the front line that will have to maintain their blocks to turn their backfield loose into the Laredo United secondary and into pay dirt.  Eagles quarterback Ricky Medina has rushed for 803 yards this season for an average of 114,7 per game, speedster tailback Mark Venegas has gained a total of 777 yards so far for an average of 111 yards per game.  The Eagles passing game with receivers Ricky Reyes, Isaac Perales and the versatile Jose Riojas are expected to see more action in this game to compliment the patented running attack.

Defensively the Eagles proud unit who are near at 100% after having to endure the game without the services of 5 to 6 starters due to injuries who last week did an amicable job against the co-front running United South Panthers will need to be ready to be flooded through the airway by the Laredo United Longhorns aerial show as well as through land and will need to come out with a few turnovers in this game.

Eagle Pass Sports Central wishes the mighty Eagle Pass Eagles varsity football team the very best of luck against the Laredo United Longhorns and invite the entire community of Eagle Pass, Texas to make the trip to Laredo, Texas on Saturday night and join the Loyal Legion of Eagles fans in supporting the Eagles and cheer them on to victory. GO EAGLESS! BEAT THE LONGHORNS!
