The District co-leading C.C. Winn Mavericks varsity football team under the leadership of head football coach Eric Villasenor riding a four game winning streak return to the friendly confines of the Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium on Friday, October 21, 2016 to square off against the San Antonio Harlandale Indians in a vital 7:30 PM District 29-5A gridiron encounter. The visiting Harlandale Indians will venture into this matchup sporting an overall season record of 3-4 and a district mark of 0-2. The home standing Mavericks will enter with an all-time school best season mark of 6-1 and a district record of 2-0. A victory on Friday night by the Mavericks will clinch the program’s first ever post season playoff berth but rest assure that the Mavericks along with the respective coach staff know very well that the big prize the program’s first ever football district title is well within their sights but true to form head football coach Eric Villasenor as well as the rest of the coaching staff have the Mavericks concentrating on only one game at a time and this week’s agenda is the San Antonio Harlandale Indians.
The visiting Harlandale Indians mentored by 30 year veteran head football coach Isaac Martinez will be led offensively by their starting quarterback Steven Benitez #12 a very good passer who spreads the ball around his receivers, not a very fast runner though. The running back chores will be handled by Miguel Leal #6 or John Navarro #21 both of whom are good downhill runners. The Indians receiving corps with feature wide receivers Steven Ruiz #87 and Franklyn Castano #85 both of whom a very capable and sure handed receivers. The slot back will be Dylan Medina #82 their second favorite receiver that is very explosive after the catch, Tight End will be the massive Jesse Sandoval #84 a very tall (6’ 3”) and big man who is their favorite go to guy in their passing scheme. The Indians offensive line will be comprised by Jeremy Rodriguez #75 their biggest lineman at right tackle, Triston Fuentes at right guard, Jacob Lopez #63 their best lineman at center, Danny Garza #78 at left guard and Louis Perez #60 at left tackle.
On defense the Indians will have Michael Tellez #44, Adrian Aguinaga #54 nd Jonathan Gonzalez #65 manning the defensive line, Jonah Maldonado #22, Robert Laque #56 as line backers and Ryan Jaramillo #35, Joel Gonzalez #10, Sergio Abarca #24 and Daniel Trejo #25 will be patrolling the secondary.
The home standing Mavericks who just keep getting better and better game by game will seek to continue to showcase their powerful patented running game with multi threat quarterback Julio Ruiz, running backs Danny Rios and Omar Hinojosa as well as slot back Ruben Esquivel carrying load behind the Maverick offensive line that dominate the of scrimmage maintaining the blocks 10 yards down field paving the way for the Mavericks to take the pigskin into the end zone. The Mavericks passing game has also been clicking on all cylinders with receivers Ruben Esquivel, Gilbert Rodriguez, Alfonso Cardona and tight end Jose Rodriguez sharing the load in toting the airmail to the promise land. The Mavericks offense has been averaging 332 yards per game 194.8 yards rushing per game and 137.2 yards passing per game will look to improve those marks against the Harlandale Indians.
The Mavericks stingy and hard tackling defense allowing 259 yards per game: 147 yards rushing per game and 112 yards passing per game. The rock solid and aggressive defensive front line of Jacob Guerra, Enrique Garza, Victor Olguin and CarlosTijerina along with the quick pursing hard tackling linebackers of Ernesto Villasenor and Alberto Duran along with the district’s top defensive secondary of Alex De Jesus, Rey Vasquez, Raul Gomez, and the ball hawking Rene Auces will certainly be ready for the challenge of minimizing the Indians offensive success.
Eagle Pass Sports Central wishes the mighty C.C. Winn Mavericks varsity football team the very best of luck against the Harlandale Indians and invite the entire community of Eagle Pass, Texas to come out to the stadium on Friday night and join the famed Mavericks Nation in supporting Mavericks and cheer them on to victory.
