The Playoff bound and District 29-5A leading C.C. Winn Mavericks’ varsity football team under the leadership of head football coach Eric Villasenor will resume their grueling and highly competitive district gridiron battles on Friday, October 28, 2016 with a road trip to Floresville, Texas to tangle with the Floresville Tigers in a marquee 7:30 PM match up. The home standing Tigers who are coming off a big victory over the previous district co-leading Uvalde Coyotes by the score of 56 to 53 will venture into this contest sporting an overall season record of 4-4 and a district mark of 2-1. The visiting C.C. Winn Mavericks will enter sporting an overall season and school best 7-1 record and an blemished district mark of 3-0.
The Floresville Tigers who currently occupy second place in the district race spearheaded by a very talented backfield led by freshman quarterback Darian Mayberry #11 who throws good passes and runs the read option very well. He is very athletic and is also a bonafide running threat. Joining him in the backfield is tailback Ken Lima #1 who is very quick and quite explosive. Also getting reps in the backfield will be Shawn Holder #30 who is more like a fullback type runner and Kane Numers #21 who is not as fast as #1. In the Tigers passing game Colton Payne #5 is by far the favorite target. He is their biggest deep threat and very explosive after the catch. Tight End will be Nathan Holman #85 who is an excellent blocker and will release in their passing scheme. The Tigers tend to run mostly to his side. The slot receiver will be Logan Hopkins #19 the Tigers second most favorite receiver has great hands and above average speed. The Tigers offensive line will be comprised by right tackle Casey Walls #62, right guard Jacob Thomas #72, center Cole Guilick #55 their second best linemen very aggressive and very consistent with his snaps, left guard George Lochamy #75 their biggest and best linemen very quick off the snap, left tackle Donivan Brown #71. *The Tigers left side of the is their best and strongest.
Defensively the Floresville feature a pair of solid linebackers in Stephen Sanchez and David Goans; along with stellar defensive lineman George Lockamy and standout free safety Colton Payne and fellow defensive back Luke Pierce. The Tigers placekicking chores will be handled by Francisco Lozano #88.
The visiting C.C. Winn Mavericks will counter with their evenly balanced offensive attack with their patented explosive ground attack and their equally powerful aerial assault. It will be a game time decision as to who will be the starting signal caller either regular starter Julio Ruiz who sat out last week’s game nursing a leg injury or back quarterback Michael Paniagua who did an amicable job last week in leading the Mavericks offense to a playoff clinching victory. Now fully healthy the explosive Mavericks backfield duo of running backs Danny Rios and Omar Hinojosa are more than ready to tote the pigskin to the promise land. The Mavericks aerial assault with stellar receivers Ruben Esquivel, Alfonso Cardona, Gilbert Rodriguez and tight end Jose Rodriguez and ready and seeking to have a big game. The Mavericks big and quick footed offensive line that are the true igniters of the Mavericks offense is geared to dominate the trenches once again to turn the Mavericks backfield loose into the secondary and provide the protection for the Mavericks to utilize their passing game as well.
The Mavericks aggressive, quick pursuing and hard tackling front four of Enrique Garza, Victor Olguin, Carlos Tijerina, Jacob Guerra as well as the bone shattering and quick pursuing line backing trio of Alberto Duran, Rolando Sanchez and Ernesto Villasenor are primed to shut down the Tigers running game. The fab-four defensive secondary unit of Alex De Jesus, Rey Vasquez, Raul Gomez and the ball hawking Rene Auces who can cover any of the top receivers in the district are ready for the test of facing off against the Tigers wide receiving crew and look forward to come away with a few turnovers.
