The Playoff bound and District 29-5A leading C.C. Winn Mavericks’ varsity football team under the leadership of head football coach Eric Villasenor resumed their grueling and highly competitive district gridiron battles on Friday, October 28, 2016 with a road trip to Floresville, Texas to tangle with the Floresville Tigers in a marquee 7:30 PM match up. The Tigers ventured into this contest sporting an overall season record of 4-4 and a district mark of 2-1. The visiting C.C. Winn Mavericks entered sporting an overall season and school best 7-1 record and an unblemished district mark of 3-0. Prior to the start of tonight’s game the C.C. Winn Mavericks were featured on KSAT 12’s Big Game Sports program where the Floresville head coach had nothing but high praise for Coach Eric Villsenor and the mighty Mavericks. In a game that was not decided until the final play of the game the proud C.C. Winn Mavericks battled their hearts out but came away just a bit short as the Floresville Tigers barely prevailed by the final score of 20 to 16 over the valiant Mavericks.
The Mavericks hard hitting and stingy defense made the presence known right away as they forced the Floresville Tigers to three and out o their first offensive series of the game. After the ensuing punt the Mavericks offense took over at their 20 yard line. Low and behold disaster struck as the Mavericks fumbled the ball away on their very first offensive play of the game.
The Tigers recovered the errant pigskin at the Mavericks 19 yard line but the Mavericks proud defense held their ground and forced the Tigers to settle for a 32 yard field goal by Francisco Lozano with 8:38 left in the first quarter. The Tigers who enjoyed excellent field possession throughout the entire first half of play began their next offensive series from the C.C. Winn 39 yard line and drove down to the Mavericks 9 yard where once again the proud Mavericks defense buckled down and held the Tigers to settle for a 26 yard field with 1:37 left I the opening period.
After a short punt by the Mavericks who surprisingly just could not get their offense going in the first half as they were held to only one first down for the entire first half of play, the Tigers mounted a 59 yard scoring drive that was capped off with a 16 yard touchdown pass from Darian Mayberry to his favorite target Colton Payne with 5:45 left in the second period. Francisco Lozano tacked on the point after to extend the Tigers lead to 13 to 0 lead over the Mavericks.
Late in the first half the Mavericks defense once again made their presence known as they forced the Tigers to punt. During the ensuing punt Mavericks defensive back Alonso Vallejo made a sensational play by locking the punt which was recovered by fellow defensive back Alex De Jesus and returned all the way to the Floresville two yard line to set up the Mavericks offense.
The Mavericks offense quickly capitalized on the turnover with a one play two yard plunge to pay dirt by the Mavericks Express Carlos Tijerina who waltzed his way untouched into the end zone with 2:43 left in the first half. Christian Rodriguez split the up rights with the point after to narrow the Mavericks deficit to 13 to 7 heading to their halftime locker room.
During the halftime period Mavericks head coach Eric Villasenor met with his coaching staff to make the necessary adjustments that would be implemented in the second half and the strategy paid off dividends immediately as the Mavericks received the second half kickoff and quickly orchestrated a brilliant five play 68 yard scoring drive that culminated with a 16 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Julio Ruiz who obviously was not at 100% as he hobbled on his injured leg all game long to his big tight end Jose Rodriguez with 9:31 showing o the third quarter clock. Christian Rodriguez converted the point after to give the Mavericks a 14 to 13 lead over the Tigers much to the delight of the quite sizeable Mavericks Nation crowd that made the trip to support their beloved Mavericks.
The home standing Tigers attempted to counter with a potential go ahead score driving down to the C.C. Winn two yard line where they had a first and goal but the stingy Mavericks defense paced by their sensational front seven of Jacob Guerra, Victor Olguin, Enrique Garza, Carlos Tijerina, Rolando Sanchez, Alberto Duran and Ernesto Villasenor did not budge one inch as they held the Tigers out of the end zone on four downs which drew a rousing approval by the Mavericks Nation.
The Mavericks offense was forced to punt on their next offensive series and the Tigers took over at their own 47 yard line where they mounted a 53 yard scoring drive capped off with a 39 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Darian Mayberry to wide receiver Colton Payne with 11:39 left in the fourth quarter. Francisco Lozano added the point after to give the Tigers a 20 to 14 lead over the Mavericks.
Late in the fourth quarter the Tigers held possession near their goal line when disaster struck as the snap from center sailed out of the end zone for a safety which narrowed the Mavericks deficit to 20 to 16 with time winding down and after the ensuing free kick the Mavericks offense took the field with one last chance to pull off a potential comeback victory.
The Mavericks offense took over at the Floresville 46 yard line where like true champions proceeded to matriculate down the field all the way down to the Tigers 19 yard line where they had four downs to tally the potential game winning score. Like true gridiron warriors the Mavericks gave it their best effort but the first three passé into the end zone within inches of being complete. On fourth down and just a few ticks left in the game quarterback Julio Ruiz’s pass into the middle of the end zone was unfortunately and heartbreakingly intercepted by the Tigers who escaped with the hard fought 20 to 16 victory over the Mavericks forcing a three way tie for the district lead with one game remaining on the schedule.
Although the Mavericks came out o the short end of this game they have nothing to be ashamed of as they battled valiantly until the final second of this contest. Eagle Pass Sports Central highly commends the absolutely outstanding performance by the entire Mavericks defensive unit who managed to hold the usually potent Floresville ground game to a measly total of 64 yards rushing for the entire game and also put up an outstanding goal line stand a made a key play by blocking a Tigers punt.
The Mavericks return home next Thursday, November 3, 2016 to close out the2016 district and regular season with a key 7:00 PM District 29-5A matchup against fellow district tri-leading Uvalde Coyotes at the Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium in a game that is also designated as C.C. Winn High School’s 2016 Homecoming game. Eagle Pass Sports Central invites the entire community of Eagle Pass, Texas as well as the surrounding area to come out Thursday night and support the playoff bound C.C. Winn Mavericks on to victory.
