The Eagle Pass Eagles varsity football team under the guidance of head football coach Tom Gonzalez culminated their respective 2016 football season on Friday, November 4, 2016 by entertaining none other the their longest and oldest gridiron rival the Del Rio Rams who are currently the District 29-6A co-leaders along with Laredo United South in a season ending 7:30 PM matchup at the Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium. The visiting and heavily favorite Del Rio Rams ventured into this game sporting an overall season record of 8-1 and a district mark of 5-1. The home standing Eagles entered with a season mark of 4-5 and a district record of 2-4.
Forcing the visiting Rams to punt on their first offensive series, the Eagles received an early gift as the snap from center sailed way over the Rams punter’s head and recovered by the Eagles defense at the Del Rio 24 yard line. The Eagles capitalized on the good fortune with a seven play scoring drive capped off with a 4 yard run to pay dirt by tailback Mark Venegas with 7:22 showing on the first quarter clock. Eagles’ placekicker Jose Riojas tacked on the point after to give the Eagles the early 7 to 0 lead over the Rams.
Early in the second quarter the Eagle Pass Eagles orchestrated an 8 play ground oriented scoring drive culminating with a 34 yard burst to pay dirt by quarterback Ricky Medina with 7:52 left in the second period. Jose Riojas split the uprights with the point after to extend the Eagles lead to 14 to 0 over the stunned district co-leading Rams.
Late in the second period the visiting Rams mounted a 70 yard scoring drive hat was punctuated with a 3 yard keeper by quarterback Greg Torres with 3:54 left in the second period. Tyler Hopkins added the point after to narrow the Rams deficit to 14 to 7. With time winding down in the first the Rams engineered a predominately aerial 61 yard scoring drive that was capped off with a 2 yard keeper by quarterback Greg Torres with only 26 seconds left in the first half. Rams’ placekicker Tyler Hopkins converted the game tying extra point to kot up the scoreboard at 14 all.
During the halftime festivities the 2016 agle Pass High School King and Queen were announced. Representing the Cheerleaders Samantha Vielma and Chance Rodriguez are the 2016 Eagle Pass High School Homecoming Queen and King.
Early in the second half the Del Rio Rams broke up the 14 all tie with a 21 yard field goal by placekicker Tyler Hopkins to give the Rams a 17 to 14 lead over the Eagles. Early in the fourth quarter the Rams padded their slim lead with a 24 yard touchdown pass from Greg Torres to standout wide receiver Gaston Flores with 11:11 left in the fourth period. Tyler Hopkins converted the point after to give the Rams a 24 to 14 lead over the Eagles.
Playing mostly for pride, the Eagle Pass Eagles quickly fought back with a 30 yard field goal off of the right leg of placekicker Jose Riojas to narrow the Eagles deficit to 24 to 17.
Late in the game the Eagles defense who were actually playing with a patched up crew forced the Rams to punt. Low and behold the Eagles received another gift as the Rams punter took the snap from center on one knee which automatically kills the play and the Eagles offense taking over at the Del Rio 21 yard line. The Eagles offense drove down to the Del Rio 8 yard line but Lady Luck was not kind on this night as they turned the ball over on downs.
The Eagles makeshift defensive crew forced the Rams to punt which gave the Eagles one final chance to tally at least a game tying score. With the Eagles faithful and loyal fans cheering them on the Eagles once again drove inside the red zone but once again Lady L:uck ailed the Eagles as their final pass attempt into the end zone was intercepted by the Del Rio defensive back to allow the Rams to escape with the hard fought 24 to 17 victory over the valiant Eagles who truly played their hearts out much to the disbelief of the ever present non-believers who were predicting a total blowout by the visiting Rams. The Eagles thus culminate their 2016 season finishing in sixth place in the district race with an overall season record of 4-6 and a district mark of 205
