The District 29-5A tri-leading C.C. Winn Mavericks varsity football team under the direction of head football coach Eric Villasenor hosted the district tri-leading Uvalde Coyotes in the 7:00 PM marquee matchup of the year in District 29-5A on Thursday, November 3, 2016 at the Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium in Eagle Pass, Texas.  Both teams entered this highly anticipated gridiron encounter sporting identical overall season records of 7-2 as well as identical district mark of 3-1 and a share of the district lead along with Floresville.  The Mavericks history making tour continues as the Pride of Southern Maverick County unleashed their powerful running game to shut out the Uvalde Coyotes by the final score of 31 to 0 in a total team effort to improve their overall season record to an all-time best of 8-2 and clinched at least a share of the 2016 District 29-5A football title in the process along with Floresville.

The visiting Uvalde Coyotes who featured one of the top scoring teams in the district had not faced a formidable defense quite like the C.C. Winn Mavericks and it showed right away as the Coyotes received the first half kickoff and proceeded what looked like a potential 60 yard scoring drive marching all the way down to the Mavericks 8 yard line where the top defense in the District introduced themselves with a four down goal line stand to keep the Coyotes out of the end zone and off the scoreboard.

The entire first half of play resembled a chess match as each team looked for the right move but just could not manage to make that one right move as the first half of play ended surprisingly in a scoreless tie.  The only success the Mavericks had in the first half was produced by tailback Danny Rios who led all rushers with 69 yards while the Coyotes first half success came through the airway as they had 110 yards passing in the first half.

During the halftime break the announcement the 2016 C.C. Winn High School Homecoming King and Queen and the Royal Court were announced by the golden voice of public address announcer Charles “Boogie” Purcell.  The 2016 Lord & Lady were Teresa Luan and Trae Mendoza representing Band, The 2016 Count & Countess were Geovana Rios and Daniel Rios representing Cheer, the 2016 Duke & Duchess were Rosario Tapia and Alejandro Favela representing Spanish Club, the 2016 Prince & Princess were Mar Corral and Fonzy Cardona representing Silverline and the 2016 C.C. Winn High School Homecoming King & Queen representing Football were Marychelo Flores and Marcus Palacios.

While the crowning of the 2016 Homecoming King and Queen and the Royal Court was going on, Head Football Coach Eric Villasenor huddled up with his offensive coordinator Heriberto Roiz and the rest of the offensive coaches to go over tendencies and alignments by the Coyotes defense and looked to make the necessary adjustments for the second half.  Coach Villasenor then met with his Co-Defensive Coordinators Saul Salas and Rene Ramirez and the rest of the Mavericks defensive coaches to go over tendencies by the Coyotes offense and implemented a few adjust for the second half.

The halftime adjustments by the Mavericks paid off both offensively and defensively immediately in the second half.  On their second offensive series, the Mavericks mounted a 67-yard scoring drive highlighted by a brilliant 53 yard run right through the heart o the Coyotes dense by tailback Danny Rios all the way to the Uvalde 7-yard line.  Two plays later Danny Rios capped off the drive with a one yard run to pay dirt with the first score of the game with 4:58 showing on the third quarter clock.  Christian Rodriguez tacked on the point after to give the Mavericks a 7 to 0 lead over the Coyotes.

After the ensuing kickoff, the Coyotes went back to their aerial attack but this time the stingy Mavericks defense were more than ready for it as Mavericks linebacker Alberto Duran intercepted a Coyotes pass attempt to set up the Mavericks offense at their own 30-yard line.

The Mavericks quickly capitalized on the turnover utilizing mainly their patented powerful running game to matriculate down the field.  Mavericks starting quarterback Julio Ruiz tallied the next score on a 37-yard sprint to the corner of the end zone with 1:19 left in the third period.  Christian Rodriguez tacked on the point after to extend the Mavericks lead to 14 to 0.

The Mavericks defense kept getting tougher as the game went along nullifying the next Coyotes offensive series with an interception by Alex De Jesus to set up the Mavericks next score which was a 24-yard field of the right foot of place kicker Christian Rodriguez with 4:51 left in the third quarter

On the next Uvalde, offensive series, the Mavericks swarming defense made their presence known again as linebacker Ernesto Villasenor intercepted a Coyotes pass at the Winn 32-yard line rambled 31 yards down the sideline to the Uvalde 37-yard line where he alertly pitched the ball back to defensive back Alonso Vallejo who sprinted the remaining 37 yards untouched into the end zone with 3:37 remaining in the game.  Christian Rodriguez added the point after to extend the Mavericks lead 24 to 0 over the Coyotes.

With the famed Mavericks Nation at a frenzy in the bleachers and time winding down in this game the Mavericks defense came through one more time as they recorded their fourth interception of the game when standout safety Rene Auces picked off the pass attempt at the Winn 43 yard line and returned it all the way to the promise with a nifty move against the last Coyote defender but during the return the Mavericks were penalized for holding so the ball was brought back out to the Uvalde Coyotes where the Mavericks offense went right back to their bread and butter with workhorse running back Danny Rios called to carry the mail punctuating the short drive a a two yard plunge into the end zone with only 12 seconds left in the game.  Christian Rodriguez split the uprights with the point after to give the C.C. Winn Mavericks their dominating 31 to 0 shutout victory over the Uvalde Coyotes behind the brilliant effort put forth by the entire Mavericks defense who held Uvalde to only 63 yards rushing for the game and recorded four interceptions on the night as well as the running of tailback Danny Rios who led all rushers with a whopping total of 261 yards on 34 carries behind the sensational blocking of the entire Mavericks offensive line.

Winn Mavericks on their outstanding 31 to 0 victory over the Uvalde Coyotes and wish you the very best of luck in your upcoming historic first ever playoff game next week where the Mavericks will face off against the Corpus Christi Carroll Tigers in a 7:30 PM UIL Region IV b-district round playoff game on Friday, November 11, 2016 at the D.W.
